The multi-layer, thin-film optical edge filters have an edge steepness greater than about 0.8% as measured by dividing (a) the edge width from the 50% transmission wavelength to the optical density 6 (“OD6”) wavelength by (b) the 50% transmission wavelength. The optical edge filters also have an average transmission above about 95%. The notch filters exhibit a blocking of OD>6, very high transmission (>90%) outside the notch(es), and a narrow notch bandwidth comparable to that of holographic notch filters. The methods for making such filters accurately determine when deposition of each layer of the filter should terminate.

A single-ended blur detection probe and method with a local sharpness map for analyzing a video image sequence uses two sets of edge filters, one for “fast edges” and the other for “slow edges.” Each set of edge filters includes a horizontal bandpass filter, a vertical bandpass filter and a pair of orthogonal diagonal filters where the frequency response of the fast edge filters overlap the frequency response of the slow edge filters. Method and system for suppressing ASE on a WDM network

A method and apparatus for assigning channel bands to a wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) system is disclosed. The WDM system includes an arrangement of optical amplifiers, banded optical add-drop multiplexers (OADMs) having blocking filters, and a tunable edge filter. The channel band assignment method suppresses amplified stimulated emissions (ASE) in a partially populated system in which at least one of the blocking filters is not in the transmission path. Channel bands are assigned from one edge of an amplified transmission window to the other in a sequential order and the tunable edge filter is adjusted to attenuate ASE wavelengths not blocked by the blocking filters as channels are assigned. A channel decommissioning method is also disclosed which employs similar techniques and the tunable edge filter to suppress ASE as blocking filters are removed or otherwise deselected from the transmission path.
