206 results about "Compacted discs" patented technology

Compact Disc (CD) is an optical disc that is used to store data. These are actually made to replace floppy disks that were used to store files and programs from the computer. The CDs eventually caused the floppy disks to become obsolete.

Authentication of documents and articles by moiré patterns

The present invention relies on the moiré patterns generated when superposing a base layer made of base band patterns and a revealing line grating (revealing layer). The produced moiré patterns comprise an enlargement and a transformation of the individual patterns located within the base bands. Base bands and revealing line gratings may be rectilinear or curvilinear. When translating or rotating the revealing line grating on top of the base layer, the produced moiré patterns evolve smoothly, i.e. they may be smoothly shifted, sheared, and possibly be subject to further transformations. Base band patterns may incorporate any combination of shapes, intensities and colors, such as letter, digits, text, symbols, ornaments, logos, country emblems, etc. . . . . They therefore offer great possibilities for creating security documents and valuable articles taking advantage of the higher imaging capabilities of original imaging and printing systems, compared with the possibilities of the reproduction systems available to potential counterfeiters. Since the revealing line grating reflects a relatively high percentage of the incident light, the moiré patterns are easily apparent in reflective mode and under normal illumination conditions. They may be used for the authentication of any kinds of documents (banknotes, identity documents, checks, diploma, travel documents, tickets) and valuable articles (optical disks, CDs, DVDs, CD-ROMs, packages for medical drugs, bottles, articles with affixed labels).

The present invention relates to a retail sale package consisting of a main panel card having a compact disc and a point-of-sale card removably attached to the main panel. The CD may be affixed by shrinkwrap, adhesive, plastic insert or other mechanical retainer. The point-of-sale card may be affixed by adhesive or shrinkwrap and may or may not contain a magnetic strip; the strip can be activated at the time of sale or by other means. The combination may be used in conjunction with the Internet to access a website for browsing and to download music or other desired electronic files onto a separate data storage device and to pay for this access with the point-of-sale card or a separate value account. The compact disc is activated by a PIN contained on the point-of-sale card or embedded in the CD itself. Additional value can be added to the point-of-sale card using a credit card, debit card checking account, or the like.

Compact disk based system for separating immunomagnetic bead labeled particulates and method thereof

Disclosed is a disk based system for separating at least two types of particulates contained in a sample fluid. The system includes a disk-like carrier board and a magnetic attraction unit. The disk-like carrier board forms at least one flow channel structure, which includes an inner reservoir, at least one separation chamber, and at least one outer reservoir arranged in sequence from a geometric center of the disk-like carrier board to an outer circumferential rim of the disk-like carrier board. A method of separation carried out with the system includes introducing the sample fluid into the inner reservoir and then rotating the disk-like carrier board to induce a centrifugal force. The sample fluid contains particulates that are labeled with immunomagnetic beads and the labeled particulates are attracted by the magnetic force generated by the magnetic attraction unit to retain in the inner reservoir or the separation chamber. Particulates not labeled with the immunomagnetic beads and contained in the sample fluid move with the sample fluid to the outer reservoir.

Method and apparatus for determining the provenance of a data carrying disc

The manufacturing process for a data carrying disc, such as a CD, begins with the production of a master, and in the physical manufacturing process of the master, variations are introduced which give the master distinctive physical characteristics and cause errors in the data. The master is used to form generations of discs, and the physical characteristics of the master are passed on down the generations. A group of discs manufactured from the same source consistently exhibit the physical characteristics of the master, and those physical characteristics are used as a "fingerprint" for identifying that source. To determine the provenance of a data carrying disc, uncorrected data is read from the disc. Information about errors is extracted from the data read. The error information is then compared with characteristic error information which characterises data carrying discs produced from a well known source to determine whether the data carrying disc has been produced from the known source. The error information extracted is representative of errors arising from the physical manufacturing process.

Method and apparatus for reconditioning compact discs

An apparatus and method for re-surfacing compact discs. One method is a two-step method in which the disc to be re-surfaced is first placed on a shaft. A resilient pad supports an abrasive medium and is positioned so the abrasive medium overlaps only the protective layer of the CD. The disc and abrasive material are rotated in opposite directions at about the same speed to remove deeper blemishes in a wet operation. Subsequent polishing is accomplished in a similar manner using a polishing compound instead of an abrasive. The re-surfacing and polishing apparatus each have motor driven shafts which are parallel and spaced apart and support the CD and pad in a cabinet. A transparent cover extends across the top of the cabinet. In another embodiment, the resurfacing and polishing is accomplished in a one-step operation in which polishing fluid is applied to a non-abrasive medium is utilized and the fluid is continuously recycled.
