A disk array apparatus including a rack-shaped basic frame, and a plurality of disk boxes that can be inserted into and pulled out of the basic frame depth-wise. Each disk box has: disk drive connectors for connecting a plurality of disk drives arranged in a matrix on a platter substrate, which is the bottom face of the disk box, roughly parallel to the depth direction of the basic frame; and a cooling module for cooling the disk drives. The disk box is a hermetically sealed structure.

Methods and apparatus for storing data which employ a hard disk memory media which is operably supported within a cartridge shell to form a disk cartridge. A portable hard disk drive with pivotable support legs includes a disk enclosure having a built-in hard disk drive and being formed from two case members connected via an upper and a lower connecting strip, respectively; two support legs in the form of two curved panels separately mounted to an outer side of a lower part of each of the two case members via a torsional spring and a pivot shaft, the torsional springs providing elastic force to pivotally turn the two support legs outward from the lower parts of the two case members to an extended position; and a push button assembly provided on the lower connecting strip to normally hold the two support legs to a closed position. When the push button assembly is pushed, the two support legs are outward pushed by the torsional springs to the extended position, allowing the whole disk enclosure to stand upright.

An apparatus, system, and method are disclosed for providing a redundant array of inexpensive disks (“RAID”) storage subsystem within a processor blade enclosure. A first RAID controller blade is included and configured to fit in a processor blade enclosure. At least one processor in communication with the first RAID controller blade is included. A disk enclosure blade is provided that includes a plurality of hard disk drives. The disk enclosure blade is configured to fit in the processor blade enclosure and the hard disk drives are in communication with the first RAID controller blade.

At least an optical disk, a spindle motor, an optical head assembly and a seeking mechanism are mounted in a disk cartridge to accordingly establish a hermetically sealed structure. Embodiments of the invention provide a rotating disk storage device including a connection structure between an FPC and a printed board and providing allowance for dimensional tolerances. In one embodiment, the rotating disk storage device includes a disk enclosure, an FPC supporting portion, and a flexible printed circuit board assembly provided with an FPC terminal area that extends along a front surface of the FPC supporting portion and further beyond an end portion of the FPC supporting portion. When the printed board is mounted on the disk enclosure, a connector terminal contacts and gives pressure to an FPC terminal formed in the FPC terminal area. This causes the FPC terminal area to flex in the direction of an arrow.

Aligned disk drives are installed in a disk box nearly taking a rectangular shape. Every two of the disk boxes are paired and accommodated in a rack in a multi-stage form. A disk enclosure includes a first enclosure controller powered by a first voltage circuit and coupled to a first I2C bus, a second enclosure controller powered by a second voltage circuit and coupled to a second I2C bus, and a switch coupled between the first and the second I2C buses. A hermetically resealable hard-disk drive (HDD) configured for recharging with a low-density gas. The hermetically resealable HDD includes a disk enclosure (DE), a magnetic-recording disk, a head-slider, an actuator, a low-density gas, a through-hole, and a plug. The DE includes a base, and a first cover and a second cover joined to the base. The second cover is disposed above the first cover. The through-hole is configurable for injection of a low-density gas into the DE. The low-density gas, having a density less than air, substantially fills the DE. The plug is press-fitted into, and hermetically seals, the through-hole. The plug is removable to allow recharging the DE with the low-density gas; and, the through-hole is configured to accept a resealing plug to be press-fit into, and to reseal hermetically, the through-hole after recharging. A method for injecting low-density gas into, and sealing, the hermetically resealable HDD is also provided.

The present invention relates to a disk cartridge, which can be accurately positioned with respect to a drive device for accessing a disk medium. The disk cartridge provided with a case rotatably accommodating a disk medium therein, an arcuate side wall which is directed forward when the case is loaded into the drive device, and a shutter member formed on at least one surface of the case, for opening or closing an opening for access to the disk medium. An engaging portion is provided at a side wall to engage with a sensor member disposed in the drive device for accessing the disk medium so as to record or reproduce information thereon.

The present invention provides a method for allowing a multi-drive tray (MDT) to be interchanged with a battery backup unit (BBU) tray within a disk enclosure blade (DEB) of a blade server. The DEB is implemented comprising a plurality of controller cards and a plurality of MDTs. One of the MDT slots within the DEB is configured to be interchanged with a BBU tray. The BBU tray is designed to include multiple BBUs and is configured to have packaging, mounting, and air flow characteristics that are similar to an MDT. In one embodiment, a controller card queries each MDT slot within the DEB and determines if any of the queried MDT slots contain a BBU tray. If a queried MDT slot contains a BBU tray, the controller card manages the queried MDT slot as a BBU slot. Otherwise, the controller card manages the queried MDT slot as an MDT slot.

A magnetic disk cartridge, which holds therein a magnetic disk with recording density and has a liner composed of polyethylene terephthalate fibers, is provided which achieves a good dust-removal effect by the liner without flawing the magnetic disk and without increasing the rotary torque of the magnetic disk. A magnetic layer of the magnetic disk is formed such that the magnetic layer contains diamond particles which have an average particle size satisfying a relationship “b−0.05≦a≦b+0.1” at 1% to 10% by weight with respect to the ferromagnetic material, where “a” represents the average particle size of the diamond particles in units of μm and “b” represents a thickness of the magnetic layer in units of μm. The fibers of the liner are selected from the fibers whose fiber diameter varies in its length direction.

A disk cartridge according to the present invention includes first and second disk storage portions, each of which has a space to partially store a disk with at least one data storage side. When closed up, the first and second disk storage portions enclose the disk entirely. The disk cartridge further includes a supporting base member with a disk storage portion rotation supporting portion that supports rotatably the first and second disk storage portions so as to make or cover an opening with respect to the disk. The opening is used to get the disk chucked externally and to allow a head to access the data storage side of the disk and read and/or write data from/on that side. At least a portion of the supporting base member overlaps with the first and second disk storage portions so as to prevent the first and second disk storage portions from moving perpendicularly to the disk.

A disk enclosure issues various small computer system interface (SCSI) commands to hard disk drives (HDDs), and acquires and stores therein disk detail data on all the HDDs. A disk controller is connected to the disk enclosure via an exclusive SCSI cable and the disk controller issues the SCSI command for requesting the disk detail data in batch. Upon receiving the SCSI command, the disk enclosure returns the disk detail data on all the HDDs in batch, in response to the SCSI command.

Disclosed is an automated disk-ejection apparatus for use in a disk system. The disk system includes a disk box for housing a disk drive, and the auto-ejection apparatus comprises: a handle for pulling out or pushing back the disk box; a pushing mechanism for pushing the handle; and a control circuit for controlling the pushing mechanism. The featured disk apparatus is designed such that while the disk box needs to be pulled out in order for loading or replacing the disk drive, the pushing mechanism is activated to push the handle. The handle can thus be rotated along the pivot into an inoperative state, for subsequently to be pulled for withdrawing the disk box. Moreover, another embodiment of the present invention relates to using a pushing mechanism to push a rotatable panel of a disk box.
