Write once disc allowing management of data area, method of managing the data area, and apparatus and method for reproducing data from write once disc

A write once disc allowing management of a data area, a method of managing the data area of the write once disc, an apparatus recording data on the write once disc, an apparatus and method of reproducing data from a write once disc. The write once disc, includes a lead-in zone, a data area, and a lead-out zone. The write once disc includes a predetermined area storing area allocation information which indicates whether at least one section of the data area is allocated for disc defect management. In the disc and method, area allocation information specifying a structure of the data area is recorded on the disc, thus allowing a recording / reproducing apparatus to recognize the data area structure. Therefore, allocating areas, such as a spare area, for disc defect management other than an area for storing user data, to the data area is possible. The allocation of the areas for disc defect management to the data area enables effective use of the write once disc.

Optical recording apparatus with drawing capability of visible image on disk face

An optical disk apparatus records information by irradiating a laser beam from a pickup onto an optical disk. A scanning section scans the laser beam relative to the optical disk. A recording control section controls the scanning section to effect recording of information. A drawing control section is provided for controlling the pickup and the scanning section to effect drawing of a visible image on the optical disk according to image information, such that the laser beam is changed between a first intensity incapable of acting on the optical disk and a second intensity capable of acting on the optical disk. A servo section periodically detects the laser beam reflected back from the optical disk when the laser beam has the first intensity, and servo-controls the irradiating of the laser beam during the drawing of the visible image based on the detection of the laser beam. The drawing control section controls the pickup for forcibly changing the laser beam to the first intensity from the second intensity when the second intensity is maintained over a predetermined period pursuant to the image information, thereby enabling the servo section to detect the laser beam having the first intensity for continuing the servo-control.

Method and Apparatus for Accessing Proteceted Data

Consumers of content protected multimedia data, such as e.g. commercially available video DVDS, want to take backup copies of these data, and want to be free to play the data on any suitable playback device, while content providers want to protect these data against pirate copying. The disclosed method for accessing application data from a first storage medium, e.g. CD, uses an electronic key for decoding or converting the application data. One or more content identifiers are attached to the application data or the first storage medium. The key is stored on a copy-protected separate second storage medium, e.g. RFID tag, and compared with the content identifier. Playback or format conversion of the application data is only possible when the second storage medium is available. System and method for optical media information storage life tracking

Expiration information stored on an optical medium is applied to determine an expiration date of the optical medium that provides a predetermined reliability of information archived on the optical medium, such as a predetermined acceptable defect level of the information at the expiration date. An expiration engine associated with an information handling system or optical disc drive determines the expiration date from one or more factors, such as the manufacture date of read-only optical media, the initialization date of recordable optical media, a quality rating associated with a defect growth rate over time of the optical media, and a desired reliability. In one embodiment, the expiration engine writes expiration information to the optical media, such as a date stamp at initialization of a recordable optical medium. Alternatively, an expiration date is stored on an information handling system to provide expiration warnings a predetermined time before the expiration date.
