Methods and apparatus for secure modification of a retention period for data in a storage system

One embodiment is a method and apparatus for modifying retention periods in a storage system, in which previously defined retention periods for units of data may be reduced. In another embodiment, the retention period of a unit of data may be modified in response to the occurrence of an event by renewing previously defined retention periods until the occurrence of the event is detected. If the occurrence of the event is detected, a retention period associated with that event may be established for the unit of data. In yet another embodiment, retention classes are used to define retention periods for units of data so that the retention period of a unit of data may be modified without modifying the unit of data itself. In a further embodiment, a request to the storage system to reduce a retention period includes authentication information that the storage system may use to verify the request.

Friction one-way clutch

The present invention is a friction one-way clutch that may be used with automotive components such as a stator in a torque converter. The clutch includes a circular outer race attached to the stator, a flat wedge ring having at least one wedge and fit into an inner perimeter of the outer race to form an interference fit with the outer race. The interference fit is formed by a wedge angle between the inner perimeter of the outer race and the outer perimeter of the wedge ring. An inner race with at least part of its outer edge formed by one or more tapered ramps fits into the inner circumference of the wedge ring. The inner race is attached by splines to a stator shaft. The components of the clutch are positioned so that if they are turned in one direction, the friction between the components will prevent the stator from continuing to turn in that direction. If the components are turned in the opposite direction, the stator is allowed to turn freely. Also provided is a method of calculating the shape of the wedge ring that allows the wedge ring to break away from the lock up condition using no or negligible force.

System and method for power production using a hybrid helical detonation device

The system and method described herein uses a hybrid pulsed detonation engine (PDE) system to drive a turbine that powers an electric generator. The combustion chamber of the PDE is shaped in a helical form, so that the external length of the section is reduced, while maintaining the distance for acceleration to detonation. This allows the achievement of deflagration to detonation transition without the help of turbulence enhancing obstacles, while keeping the overall size of the detonation tube small. The PDE output can be scaled by: increasing the cross sectional area of the detonation chamber; increasing the number of detonation tubes; and increasing the frequency of operation of the PDE. The replacement of conventional deflagrative internal combustion engines, including gas turbines and reciprocating engines, with pulsed detonation engines for electric power generation, may provide fuel savings and have a lower environmental impact.

Single sensor press system

A tortilla press utilizing a single sensor provides improved efficiency and accuracy. The press has a belt driven by a motor and a platen driven by a hydraulic cylinder. The motor is controlled by an AC inverter. A programmable logic controller (PLC) controls the AC inverter and hydraulics associated with the hydraulic cylinder of the platen. The PLC coordinates the movement of the belt and the movement of the platen. A sensor detects detectible elements on the belt and sends a signal to the inverter to initiate stopping of the belt. The inverter detects the zero hertz from the motor once the motor and belt have stopped and sends a signal to the PLC indicating that the belt has stopped. The PLC in turn passes a command that sends a signal to bring the platen down.

Package design and method for electrically connecting die to package

A method and apparatus for electrically connecting a die to a package while reducing the length of wirebonds. This in turn reduces wire-sweep and the cost of manufacture. To reduce the length of the wirebonds, bonding holes are created through an insulating layer of the package to expose a conductive layer. A wirebond connects through the bonding hole to a conductive layer that is exposed by the hole. The attachment point for the wirebond on the conductive layer may be prepared to serve as a bonding pad. Using this technique the prior art method utilized a bonding pad on the top surface of the inner surface of the package, which electrically connects through a trace to a via, which in turn electrically connects to a conductive layer may be avoided thereby allowing for closer spacing of radially concentric rows of attachment points on the package around the die.
