Reflection type compound prism and optical pickup apparatus employing the same

A reflection type compound prism and an optical pickup apparatus employing the same. As a light beam is passed through the compound prism, a size of the light beam in a direction perpendicular to a reference plane is reduced by a first reflection surface, propagated toward an objective lens by second and third reflection surfaces and the size restored by reflecting the light beam from a fourth reflection surface forming an angle less than 45° with respect to the reference plane so that a height of an optical system is reducible to obtain a small thin optical pickup with a desired NA. The second and third reflection surfaces are spaced apart in a direction perpendicular to the reference plane by an amount close to a diameter of the light beam at a point of incidence of the light beam with the compound prism.

Fuel cut-off valve

A fuel cut-off valve 100 of the invention is attached to an upper portion of a fuel tank and connects and disconnects inside with and from outside of the fuel tank according to the fuel level in the fuel tank. In the fuel cut-off valve 100 of the invention, a valve casing 110 forms a first valve chest 120 and a second valve chest 130 connected to the fuel tank and has an inter-valve chest flow passage 112 connecting the first valve chest 120 to the second valve chest 130 and a canister connection port 102 connecting the second valve chest 120 to a canister placed outside the fuel tank. A first float 124 and a second float 134 are respectively located in the first valve chest 120 and in the second valve chest 130. When the fuel level in the fuel tank rises to reach a preset first level FL1, the first float 124 moves up to close an opening 122 and thereby close the inter-valve chest flow passage 112. When the fuel level in the fuel tank further rises to reach a preset second level FL2 that is higher than the preset first level FL1, the second float 134 moves up to close an upstream end opening 132 of the canister connection port 102 and cut off the flow of fuel vapor to the canister. This arrangement of the invention effectively ensures the sufficient performances and the enhanced reliabilities of the leakage protection function and the backflow prevention function of the fuel cut-off valve.

Fluid sample collection device

Disclosed herein is a sample collection device for an aqueous fluid, such as whole blood, serum, plasma and urine. The device comprises a cartridge body defining an elongate sample collection passage that has open ends. The passage is arranged to draw the fluid into the passage by capillary action. The passage is provided along a portion of its length with a sample metering stop in the form of a hydrophobic coating arranged to prevent flow of the fluid by capillary action thereacross. A sample receiving portion of the passage extending between a collection end and the metering stop is non-linear, and preferably defines a pair of straight limbs connected by a bend. By providing a non-linear passage in this way, the maximum gravitational force which can act on the collected sample is reduced as compared to a conventional linear passage, thereby reducing the tendency of the sample to leak from the device and potentially avoiding the need for one or both ends of the passage to be sealed. The sample receiving portion of the passage may be provided with a hydrophilic coating to enhance the capillary action. A particularly suitable hydrophilic coating for a whole blood sample collection device is heparin, which may also serve as an anticoagulant for the blood.
