Diode-Like Composite Semiconductor Device

A silicon-made low-forward-voltage Schottky barrier diode is serially combined with a high-antivoltage-strength high-electron-mobility transistor made from a nitride semiconductor that is wider in bandgap than silicon. The Schottky barrier diode has its anode connected to the gate, and its cathode to the source, of the HEMT. This HEMT is normally on. The reverse voltage withstanding capability of the complete device depends upon that between the drain and gate of the HEMT.

Electro-optical devices using dynamic reconfiguration of effective electrode structures

Variable liquid crystal devices for controlling the propagation of light through a liquid crystal layer use a frequency dependent material to dynamically reconfigure effective electrode structures in the device. The frequency of a drive signal that generates an electric field in the device may be varied, and the frequency dependent material has different charge mobilities for the different frequencies. At a low charge mobility, the frequency dependent material has little effect on the existing electrode structures. However, at a high charge mobility, the frequency dependent material appears as an extension of the fixed electrodes, and may be used to change the effective electrode structure and, thereby, the spatial profile of the electric field. This, in turn, changes the optical properties of the liquid crystal, thus allowing the optical device to be frequency controllable.

Rotary Steerable Push-the-Bit Drilling Apparatus with Self-Cleaning Fluid Filter

ActiveUS20130118812A1Effectively self-cleaningConstant engagementDrill bitsDrilling rodsPistonDrill hole
A steerable drilling apparatus includes a control system inside a cylindrical housing connected to a drill bit having radially-extendable pistons. A fluid-metering assembly directs a piston-actuating fluid into fluid channels leading to respective pistons. The control system controls the fluid-metering assembly to allow fluid flow to selected pistons, causing the actuated pistons to temporarily extend in the opposite direction to a desired wellbore deviation, thereby deflecting the drill bit away from the borehole centerline. An upper member in the fluid-metering assembly can be moved to stabilize, steer, and change TFA within the drill bit. The control system and drill bit are connected so as to facilitate removal to change the drill bit's steering section and cutting structure configuration or gauge simultaneously. The apparatus may incorporate a fluid filter module mounted to the control system. The pistons may incorporate auxiliary cutting elements to provide near-bit reaming capability.

Water cooled liquid fuel valve

A water cooled valve is provided in the form of a check valve, an air purge valve, a distributor valve, a combination air purge and distributor valve and the like for use in the liquid fuel system of a gas turbine. A movable valve member controls the flow of fluid through the valve's fuel circuit. A separate cooling circuit circulates cooling water through the valve near or alongside the valve member. The water is of a lower temperature than the high temperature liquid fuel, and thereby carries away heat transferred to the valve by the fuel. In one form, the cooling circuit is formed in part by a helical groove in the periphery the valve body housing the valve member. A sealed water jacket surrounds the valve body and has dedicated supply and return ports for coupling the valve to a water supply via water lines. The water ports are positioned tangentially to induce swirling flow inside the valve.

Pressure casting of electric rotors

A rotor for an induction motor and a method of preparing same. The method includes making a squirrel-cage rotor made up of a cage and a laminate stack by forming a mold around the stack, heating the stack and introducing a molten metal into the mold such that the molten metal substantially fills a space defined in the stack that corresponds to the cage. In one form, the space includes slots or related channels formed in the stack that upon filling with the molten metal become longitudinal bars that form electric current loops with end rings of the cage. By heating the stack and maintaining it at a temperature high enough to keep the molten metal in a substantially molten state at least long enough for it to flow through the slots of the stack, premature freezing of the molten metal is avoided. In addition, by providing low pressure to the molten metal in conjunction with the elevated temperature in the stack, flow is promoted to ensure a substantially porosity-free, fully dense squirrel-cage for the rotor.

Tabbed transfer fins for air-cooled heat exchanger

Heat transfer fins (110), and heat exchangers (100) incorporating such fins (110), enhancing heat transfer with acceptable pressure drop increase. The fins (110) include tabs or secondary fins bent upward and downward from the fin body at a selected bend angle. All or a majority of the tabs are aligned with a simple flow path or with local flow paths for cooling air adjacent the fins (110) to minimize turbulence and pressure drop. The tabs are planar and generally aligned parallel to the simple flow path or local flow paths and are arranged so as to serve as a plurality of sites for starting new boundary layers by offsetting the tabs such that downstream tabs are not shadowed by upstream tabs. The tabs have a height sufficiently large to extend the tabs out into boundary layers on the fin (110). The tabs provide more uniform flow over fins (110) and shrink wake size behind tubes (120).

Hydraulic System For A Transmission With Pump Inlet Diffuser

A hydraulic system for a transmission has a diffuser housing with a fluid inlet passage that feeds one or more pump inlet ports, and a fluid return passage, such as to return fluid from a pressure regulator valve, that is in fluid communication with the fluid inlet passage. The hydraulic system also has a filter housing with a filter outlet portion that is in fluid communication with the fluid inlet passage upstream of the pump inlet port(s). The fluid return passage is downstream of the filter outlet portion. Thus, flow through the fluid return passage can create suction, causing increased flow through the filter outlet portion, such as from a fluid sump. Specifically, the diffuser housing is configured so that the fluid inlet passage has a converging portion downstream of the filter outlet portion and a diverging portion downstream of the converging portion.
