Deployment system for intraluminal devices

InactiveUS6899727B2Facilitate removalFacilitate fluoroscopic visualizationStentsBlood vesselsProsthesisBiomedical engineering
A constraining sheath for use around an endoprosthesis (e.g., a stent device, with or without a graft covering), which may be a balloon expandable endoprosthesis but more preferably is a self-expanding prosthesis. The endoprosthesis is coaxially enclosed within the constraining sheath, which is an outer, disruptable, preferably implantable tubular sheath, preferably made of ePTFE. The constraining sheath and endoprosthesis are preferably mounted together as an assembly on an angioplasty balloon for delivery. Deployment of the endoprosthesis entails inflating the angioplasty balloon to a pressure sufficient to disrupt or break the constraining sheath in a prescribed fashion, thereby allowing a self-expanding endoprosthesis to spontaneously deploy. The constraining sheath of ePTFE may be attached to the endoprosthesis and implanted along with the device, or alternatively attached to the balloon catheter shaft and removed with the balloon catheter.

Pressure/force computer controlled drug delivery system with automated charging

An automatic injection device includes a drive mechanism and a sensor used to determine an internal characteristic such as a force or internal pressure generated during an injection process. This characteristic is then used as a control parameter by a microprocessor or controller which generates corresponding commands to the drive mechanism. In a particularly advantageous embodiment, the characteristic is used to calculate an exit pressure at which fluid ejected by the device through an elongated tube. The drive mechanism is then operated in such a manner that the exit pressure is maintained at a predetermined level to insure that a patient does not suffer pain and / or tissue damage.

Pain monitor for a patient undergoing a medical procedure

A pain monitor for a patient undergoing a medical procedure includes a housing adapted to fit in a hand of the patient, a force sensor, and a battery-powered data processor. The patient is instructed to squeeze the housing with a force representing his level of pain. That force is measured by the sensor, acquired by the data processor and then wirelessly transmitted to an outside data receiver for further processing and recording. This device allows the patient to non-verbally express his perception of the level of pain which in turn allows a physician to adjust the course of the procedure or the level of pain-reducing medication. The pain monitor of the invention is particularly useful during a colonoscopy procedure.

Rapid diagnostic assay

Disclosed is a rapid and easy to use diagnostic tool that a point-of-care practitioner can use to specifically identify the cause of a disease, such as the upper respiratory infection (URI) pharyngitis. Such a disease has multiple potential causative pathogens and has a number of combined clinical manifestations. The diagnostic tool is rapid in order to provide the busy point-of-care practitioner with an assay result within a time that does not affect patient flow. The time usually available to such a practitioner is optimally less than 10 minutes, so that an assay that detects multiple pathogens rapidly is regarded as one that does so in less than 10 minutes. The diagnostic tool can be operated with minimal training and within the confines of said practitioner's environment. The diagnostic tool has specificity and sensitivity above those of the prior art devices. The tool is self-contained, which thereby helps to control the spread of infection and eases the burden of disposal of used equipment. The tool includes a diagnostic card configured to enable a plurality of nucleic acid diagnostic assays for rapidly detecting the presence or absence of multiple pathogens at the point-of-care. The tool includes a device that interacts with the card and that contains assay analysis means.

System and method for sensing and analyzing inventory levels and consumer buying habits

The invention relates to a system and methods for sensing and analyzing inventory levels and consumer buying habits. The system includes a sensor pad that can be easily installed on a display shelf by simply resting the panel on the shelf. Sensors are mounted inside the sensor pad that are hardwired to circuitry collectively called a smart hub. The hub is a programmable device with an integrated paging transceiver for communicating with a remotely located server that is managed by the inventory sensing service provider. The hub periodically transmits a report, which is highly configurable, to the service provider's server, preferably as a text message over the paging network, which arrives at a service provider's server after being converted to an e-mail. This server converts the information in the reports into inventory data and stores this data in a database that customers of the inventory service can access remotely. The server also generates reports reflecting inventory data and consumer purchasing behavior for the various display racks equipped with a smart hub.

Method of filtering an image for high precision machine vision metrology

A structured morphology filtering method is disclosed for filtering an image for high precision machine vision metrology using specifically-determined structuring elements to precisely preserve the location of specific features in the filtered image. A selected structuring element shape generally exhibits geometric similarity with at least a portion of the feature to be preserved in the filtered image. The structuring element may be oriented to corresponds to the orientation of the feature to be inspected. For example, for a linear feature to be inspected, the optimal structuring element is a line or narrow rectangle at the same orientation, while for images of circles, it is a circle. The orientation of the structuring element may be determined or adjusted automatically during a set of automatic inspection operations, based on an automatic determination of the orientation of the feature to be inspected.
