Controlling service quality of voice over Internet protocol on a downlink channel in high-speed wireless data networks

The present invention provides a method and an apparatus for controlling service quality of data communications in a wireless network in which quality of service control for voice over internet protocol packets is provided on a downlink shared channel. A method is provided for a wireless communications between at least a first and a second service user. The method comprises prioritizing transmission of voice over internet protocol packets for the first and second service users over a shared downlink channel based on a first end-to-end delay that the first service user experiences relative to a second end-to-end delay that the second service user experiences. For example, such a priority adaptation may provide quality of service control for voice over internet protocol over a high-speed downlink packet access channel based on an end-to-end delay that a mobile-to-mobile user may be currently experiencing relative to a mobile-to-land user. In this way, a scheduler at a base station of a communications system may maximize use of voice over internet protocol capacity while maintaining an acceptable level of end-to-end delay for different users of mobile stations.

There is provided methods, devices and computer program products for distributing a plurality of virtual IEEE 802.11 wireless networks through a heterogeneous infrastructure. A terminal sends a service provider request to an access point. The service provider request is forwarded to a master server which searches for available service providers. Acknowledgement information relating to available service providers capable of operatively connecting the terminal to the data communications network via the access point is sent by the master server to the access point. The access point forwards this information to the terminal. The access point may thus distribute a plurality of virtual IEEE 802.11 wireless networks, their number only constrained by the number of distinct identifiable service providers and the memory of the master server. A data connection may be established in the absence of a direct service agreement between the service provider of the terminal and the operator of the access point.

System and method for performing an inter-system handoff between a high rate packet data mobile network and a voice mobile network

A system and method for transmitting packet data to a hybrid mobile terminal upon inter-system handoff is provided. The terminal communicates with High Rate Pack Data (HRPD) and voice mobile networks. A Packet Control Function (PCF) system converts received data for transmission to the terminal into Generic Routing Encapsulation (GRE) packet data, stores the GRE packet data combined with a GRE packet key in an active queue, transmits it to an access network, and stores packet data stored in the active queue in a dormant queue when receiving a link release message from the access network. The access network converts GRE packet data received from the PCF system into an Radio Link Protocol Data (RLP) packet, stores it in combination with a GRE packet sequence number, and transmits it to the terminal. When detecting air link loss with the terminal, the access network creates and transmits a link release message including a GRE packet sequence number that has not been transmitted to the terminal.
