A Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receiver and associated method capable of acquiring weak GNSS signals from a plurality of GNSS satellites produces a GNSS signal's code time, carrier frequency, and data bit transition parameters for subsequent signal tracking and position fixing. The GNSS receiver includes a baseband signal processor with special functionalities for acquiring weak signals. In a preferred embodiment, the time and frequency uncertainty space is reduced using available information and then special techniques are used to rapidly search the remaining uncertainty space. Successive reversal of short-length correlations within a data bit interval (a block) enables data bit transition detection and data bit sign correction prior to coherent integration. Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) is applied as a bank of bandpass filters to coherently accumulate blocks of short-length correlations over extended coherent integration intervals to boost the signal power while averaging noise out despite unknown data bit transitions.

Modulation phase shift to compensate for optical passband shift

Disclosed is a technique for compensating for optical passband shift of an optical component (for example an optical demultiplexer). A broadband source coupled to a dispersive element generates a chirped pulsed optical signal. Data is modulated onto particular wavelengths of the chirped pulsed optical signal by appropriately synchronizing a data modulator. The modulated signal is transmitted to the downstream optical demultiplexer, which may be subject to passband shift due to, for example, changes in environmental conditions. A feedback signal from an output port of the demultiplexer is provided to the transmitter and is used to phase shift the modulator. The phase shift results in effectively adjusting the wavelength onto which the data is modulated to substantially correspond to the passband centers of the demultiplexer.

Apparatus and method for improving the tolerance of tone-based optical channel monitoring to stimulated raman scattering

For wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) communications, apparatus and methods are provided for performing tone-based optical channel monitoring that is less sensitive to stimulated Raman scattering (SRS). In tone-based optical channel monitoring, in which WDM channels are modulated with one or more tones, detecting and measuring the tone power is commonly used as a measure of signal power in each channel. In WDM systems with long fiber spans and high signal powers, however, SRS tends to transfer energy from shorter wavelengths to longer wavelengths, whereby the tones are no longer accurately indicative of the signal power of the individual wavelength channels. Apparatus and methods are provided which reduce the effect of SRS by filtering the monitored WDM signals into sub-bands and detecting each sub-band independently.
