Nanodiamond PCD and methods of forming

A nanodiamond tool, including a mass of sintered nanodiamond particles can be produced having improved mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties. The sintered mass can contain greater than about 95% by volume nanodiamond and greater than about 98% by volume carbon. Such nanodiamond tools can be formed by assembling a mass of nanodiamond particles and sintering the mass of nanodiamond particles to form a sintered mass. Prior to sintering, the mass of nanodiamond particles can be substantially free of non-carbon materials such as metal binders, sintering aids or the like. Upon sintering, the nanodiamond particles sinter together at high pressures and lower temperatures than those typically required in producing polycrystalline diamond compacts with diamond crystals of a larger size. The absence of non-carbon materials improves the high temperature performance and reliability of the nanodiamond tools of the present invention.

Method for chemical vapor deposition of silicon on to substrates for use in corrosive and vacuum environments

A method of passivating the surface of a substrate to protect the surface against corrosion, the surface effects on a vacuum environment, or both. The substrate surface is placed in a treatment environment and is first dehydrated and then the environment is evacuated. A silicon hydride gas is introduced into the treatment environment, which may be heated prior to the introduction of the gas. The substrate and silicon hydride gas contained therein are heated, if the treatment environment was not already heated prior to the introduction of the gas and pressurized to decompose the gas. A layer of silicon is deposited on the substrate surface. The duration of the silicon depositing step is controlled to prevent the formation of silicon dust in the treatment environment. The substrate is then cooled and held at a cooled temperature to optimize surface conditions for subsequent depositions, and the treatment environment is purged with an inert gas to remove the silicon hydride gas. The substrate is cycled through the silicon depositing step until the surface of the substrate is covered with a layer of silicon. The treatment environment is then evacuated and the substrate cooled to room temperature.

Method, apparatus and formulation for an interpenetrating network polymer

An alginate-polyacrylamide IPN hydrogel formulation for 3D printing using a dual syringe system where the components that initiate polymerization of each network remain separated until printing. The dual syringe system may use a single motor and mixing head to combine both parts of the hydrogel formulation for controlled polymerization of the material. The elastic and time-dependent viscoelastic properties (stress relaxation) are tuned to match mammalian tissues by changing the crosslink density and monomer concentration. The fracture energy of the material may be increased by soaking in a calcium chloride solution. The resulting IPN polymer material may find application in soft tissue medical simulation devices, particularly because the mechanical properties may be tuned to mimic the elastic and viscoelastic properties of muscle tissue and may be 3D printed in the shape of anatomical parts.
