Efficiently sending event notifications over a computer network

A method for efficiently sending notifications over a network. A client system requests to be notified when an event occurs. A server system receives the requests and monitors for the occurrence of the event. When the event occurs a single packet using a connectionless protocol (such as User Datagram Protocol) is sent to the client to notify the client of the occurrence of the event. Using a connectionless protocol to send notification reduces the overall amount of data on the network and thus reduces network congestion and the processing capacity of the server and client. When the client system receives notification an attempt to establish a connection using as connection-oriented protocol is executed. Additional data associated with the occurrence of the event is transferred over the connection. The server may repeatedly send notification using a connectionless protocol until a connection using a connection-oriented protocol is established. The server may send notification that notifies the client of the occurrence of multiple events simultaneously within a single packet. The server may also notify multiple applications of the occurrence of an event using a single notification.

Configuration and method for bidirectional transmission of signals in a motor vehicle

A method for operating a tire pressure measuring system uses a transceiver. When triggered, the transceiver transmits an energy signal to a transponder in a tire that then responds with a data signal. So that the energy signals do not interfere with other transceivers on receipt of the data signals, the method makes provision for the repetition rate with which the energy signals are triggered to be a function of the speed of the vehicle. Transmission is more frequent at higher speed than at lower speed.

Apparatus and method for validating a database record before applying journal data

An apparatus and method includes a database journal that records journal entries. Each journal entry includes a validation value that is computed from the data and metadata for the record before it is changed. In this manner, journal entries may be applied with confidence to a record in a database. This is especially useful when minimized data journal entries are used. If the validation value of the journal entry matches the validation value computed from the data and metadata of the record that the journal entry is to be applied to, then the record before applying the journal entry is identical to the record in the original database, and the journal data may be applied to the database record. If the validation value of the journal entry does not match the validation value computed from the data and metadata of the record that the journal entry is to be applied to, the record is not the same as in the original database when the journal entry was generated. As a result, an error message is generated to indicate that an error was encountered when applying the journal entry. In this manner, the apparatus and method of the preferred embodiments automatically validate a database record before applying journal data to the record.
