Vending machines with field-programmable locks

A vending machine uses a field-programmable electronic lock that learns a key code from a corresponding electronic key, a hand-held program unit, or an external computing device via wireless communications. In one mode, the electronic lock has a learning process activation device that is accessible only when the door of the vending machine is in the open position. In another mode, the electronic lock is programmed in the field without first opening the vending machine. A program command and access control data including a new access code are transmitted wirelessly from a hand-held program unit or the like. Alternatively, an external computing device is used to program the electronic lock via long-range wireless communications, and an electronic key is then used to open the electronic lock to physically access the vending machine.

Process for Thermal-Mechanical Pretreatment of Biomass

Disclosed is a process for the thermal-mechanical pretreatment of biomass. The process includes subjecting a biomass feedstock including fibers containing cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin, to thermal reaction under conditions exceeding atmospheric pressure, at a temperature exceeding ambient temperature, at a predetermined moisture content and for a predetermined amount of time. Subsequently, the pressure of said thermal reaction is reduced under conditions resulting in explosive decompression of said biomass. The decompressed biomass is then subjected to axial shear forces to mechanically reduce the size of the fibers of the biomass to obtain treated biomass. The resultant treated biomass has a high level of enzymatic digestability and a low concentration of degradation products.

Snake plunger

This invention relates to a drain plunger that snakes clogged drains at the same time that the drains are being plunged. The “snake plunger” includes a pleated bellows forming a head section which is removably coupled to a handle. Further, in one embodiment, the head and handle sections are jointly configured to release air from within the bellows while the plunger is being inserted into a basin filled with wastewater, thereby reducing or eliminating potential spillover. Further, a flexible elongated snake disposed within the interior of the bellows enters the drain as the plunger bellows is compressed. The snake is capable of dislodging and breaking up obstructions within a drain. Further, the snake may also have a hook at its lower end that is capable of snaring items causing obstructions within the drain. These features combine to create a plunger that provides a superior ability to effectively clear clogged drains.

System and method for pain reduction during skin puncture and breakable tip therefor

An instrument, article and method are provided for minimizing pain during administration by injection of a liquid, such as, an anesthetic. The instrument has a forward end. A rod or lightpipe mounted freely for vibration projects out of the forward end. The article, a single use tip, is composed of a tip sleeve removably mounted on the forward end of the instrument and a tip member removably mounted on the projecting rod or lightpipe to vibrate a preselected injection site on a human or animal. The tip sleeve and tip member are covered by an elastic overmold that enables the tip member to vibrate freely with respect to the tip sleeve and light from the lightpipe to illuminate the injection site. The overmold of the single use tip is torn during removal of the single use tip from the instrument.
