Internal combustion engine control for improved fuel efficiency

A variety of methods and arrangements for improving the fuel efficiency of internal combustion engines are described. Generally, selected combustion events are skipped during operation of the internal combustion engine so that other working cycles can operate at a better thermodynamic efficiency. In one aspect of the invention, an engine is controlled to operate in a variable displacement mode. In the variable displacement mode, fuel is not delivered to the working chambers (e.g. cylinders) during selected “skipped” working cycles. During active (“non-skipped”) working cycles, a maximum (e.g., unthrottled) amount of air and an optimized amount of fuel is delivered to the relevant working chambers so that the fired working chambers can operate at efficiencies closer to their optimal efficiency. A controller is used to dynamically determine the chamber firings required to provide the engine torque based on the engine's current operational state and conditions. The chamber firings may be sequenced in real time or in near real time in a manner that helps reduce undesirable vibrations of the engine.

Method and system for classifying an integrated circuit for optical proximity correction

A method and system for performing optical proximity correction (OPC) on an integrated circuit (IC) chip design is disclosed. The system and method of the present invention includes dividing the IC chip into a plurality of local task regions, identifying congruent local task regions, classifying congruent local task regions into corresponding groups, and performing OPC for each group of congruent local task regions.By identifying and grouping congruent local task regions in the IC chip, according to the method and system disclosed herein, only one OPC procedure (e.g., evaluation and correction) needs to be performed per group of congruent local task regions. The amount of data to be evaluated and the number of corrections performed is greatly reduced because OPC is not performed on repetitive portions of the IC chip design, thereby resulting in significant savings in computing resources and time.

Methods of identifying biological patterns using multiple data sets

Systems and methods for enhancing knowledge discovery from data using multiple learning machines in general and multiple support vector machines in particular. Training data for a learning machine is pre-processed in order to add meaning thereto. Multiple support vector machines, each comprising distinct kernels, are trained with the pre-processed training data and are tested with test data that is pre-processed in the same manner. The test outputs from multiple support vector machines are compared in order to determine which of the test outputs if any represents a optimal solution. Selection of one or more kernels may be adjusted and one or more support vector machines may be retrained and retested. Optimal solutions based on distinct input data sets may be combined to form a new input data set to be input into one or more additional support vector machine. The methods, systems and devices of the present invention comprise use of Support Vector Machines for the identification of patterns that are important for medical diagnosis, prognosis and treatment. Such patterns may be found in many different datasets. The present invention also comprises methods and compositions for the treatment and diagnosis of medical conditions.

Steam producing hydrocarbon fueled power plant employing a PEM fuel cell

InactiveUS6120923AReduce pressureIncrease steam temperatureHydrogenSolid electrolytesFuel cellsPower station
The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for creating steam from the cooling stream of a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell. As the cooling stream exits the PEM fuel cell, a portion of the cooling fluid is extracted from the circulating cooling stream, thereby creating a secondary stream of cooling fluid. This secondary stream passes through a restriction, which decreases the pressure of the secondary stream to its saturation pressure, such that when the secondary stream enters a flash evaporator it transforms into steam. Creating steam from the cooling stream of a PEM fuel cell power plant provides the fuel processor with a co-generated source of steam without adding a significant amount of auxiliary equipment to the power plant.

A sensor for blood component analysis that can correct the effect of a hematocrit easily is provided. The sensor includes an analysis portion including a working electrode, a counter electrode, and a reagent portion. The reagent portion includes an oxidoreductase that reacts with the blood component and a mediator, and the blood component is measured by causing a redox reaction between the blood component and the oxidoreductase in the presence of the mediator and detecting a redox current generated by the redox reaction by the working electrode and the counter electrode. Method and apparatus for monitoring glucose levels in a biological tissue

In accordance with the invention, a low coherence interferometer is used to non-invasively monitor the concentration of glucose in blood by shining a light over a surface area of human or animal tissue, continuously scanning the light over a two dimensional area of the surface, collecting the reflected light from within the tissue and constructively interfering this reflected light with light reflected along a reference path to scan the tissue in depth. Since the reflection spectrum is sensitive to glucose concentration at particular wavelengths, measurement and analysis of the reflected light provides a measure of the level of glucose in the blood. The measurement of glucose is taken from multiple depths within blood-profused tissue, and sensitivity is preferably enhanced by the use of multiple wavelengths. Noise or speckle associated with this technique is minimized by continuously scanning the illuminated tissue in area and depth.
