478 results about "Sun exposure" patented technology

Sun exposure causes most of the skin changes that we think of as a normal part of aging. Over time, the sun's ultraviolet (UV) light damages the fibers in the skin called elastin. When these fibers break down, the skin begins to sag, stretch, and lose its ability to go back into place after stretching.

Wireless communication device with integrated electromagnetic radiation sensors

A hand-held mobile communication device, such as smart telephone, incorporating sensors and signal conditioning modules for measuring signals from external sources of electromagnetic radiation (EMR) in the low, radio, ultraviolet, and infrared spectral ranges. These include the detector for receiving and monitoring electromagnetic fields originating from various external sources of radiation that pose potential health hazards or may interfere with various electronic devices. The mobile phone equipped with such sensors could alternate between communication and monitoring functions. Other integrated EMR sensors are a photodiode for the ultraviolet detection to monitor the user's sun exposure and a thermopile for non-contact measurement of temperature of humans or inanimate objects. This infrared sensor in combination with a photographic digital camera and a pattern recognition signal processing allows measuring temperatures at specific locations and from optimal distances to the surface of the object to enhance accuracy of non-contact temperature measurements.

Protective covers

An enhanced protective cover includes a top and bottom textile layer and an air permeable, moisture-vapor-transmissive, expanded polytetrafluoroethylene membrane layer located between the two textile layers. The cover exhibits an MVTR rating of at least 4000 g / m2 / day. The protective cover also includes a top layer coating or fibre treatment of a nano-ceramic material designed to increase the durability of the cover and increase the resistance to abrasion and wear while also resisting environmental conditions including exposure to solar radiation, temperature and humidity. Alternatively, the upper layer of the protective cover may incorporate ceramic coated fibers or ceramic co-extruded fibers, or carbon nanotubes. The protective cover may also feature a fire resistant application. The top textile layer may also include a permanent, highly breathable and highly durable electro-static discharge feature added to the inside of the layer by laying down a carbon based printed pattern on the inside of the layer.

Anti-contamination coated multi-layer insulation

A multi-layer insulation (MLI) blanket with enhanced contamination inhibiting properties and a method for inhibiting the formation of organic residues on the outer surface of a MLI blanket are provided. In one embodiment, a MLI blanket (10) attachable to a spacecraft or other structure includes a plurality of metallized layers (20, 30, 40, 50) separated by mesh layers (60, 62, 64). An anti-contamination coating (80) comprised of a photocatalytic material is disposed between a high emittance layer (70) that overlies the outer surface (20A) of the outer metallized layer (20) and an outer electrically conductive layer (90). When exposed to ultraviolet or near-ultraviolet radiation components present in solar radiation, the anti-contamination coating (80) catalyzes the breakdown of organic residues on the outer surface of the MLI blanket (10) thereby maintaining the reflective properties of the MLI blanket (10) and ensuring that solar absorptance of the MLI blanket (10) is maintained at or below an acceptable threshold level.

Method and system for managing and quantifying sun exposure

Embodiments of the present invention disclose a method and system for managing pre- and in-sun exposure of skin. The method comprises during pre-sun exposure phase, inputting a location information of a user, and other contextual ambient information therefor, thereby facilitating determination of the UV level thereof, determining a baseline information in connection with the skin in a part of the day from at least one of midnight and dawn to noon, scanning at least one most predictably susceptible zone of one or more zones of the skin predictably susceptible to sun exposure, determining the Sun Protection Factor (SPF) level for a sunscreen for use by the user based on one or more quantifiable qualitative and quantitative parameters therefor, recommending the determined SPF level for the sunscreen for use by the user thereby facilitating search, identification and selection of one or more sunscreen products, solutions and regimens by the user, during in-sun exposure phase, at least one of determining whether or not the UV index of the location is confined in at least one of one or more predetermined ranges and reminding the user to scan the skin at one or more predetermined intervals depending upon the confinement of the determined UV index or level in at least one of the one or more predetermined ranges.

Method for preparing grifola frondosa cultivation material through utilization of pecan production and processing waste

The invention provides a grifola frondosa cultivation material. The grifola frondosa cultivation material is characterized in that pecan branch scraps, outer shell scraps and shell scraps are used as main raw materials, corncobs, rice bran, bean cakes, humus mountain soil, calcium superphosphate, light calcium carbonate and the like are used as auxiliary materials, and the water content of the cultivation material is 63%-65%. The invention further provides a method for preparing the cultivation material. The grifola frondosa cultivation material and the method have the advantages that the pecan branch scraps, the outer shell scraps and the shell scraps undergo sun exposure and secondary fermentation or piled ageing treatment, poisonous bacteriostat is degraded, macromolecular substances such as xylogen, cellulose and the like are decomposed into simple materials which can be absorbed by grifola frondosa hyphae easily, and the growth of the grifola frondosa hyphae is promoted; the cultivation material is reasonable in proportion, fungous materials are good in breathability and strong in water-retaining property, grifola frondosa is good in growth and high in yield, and the biological efficiency of the grifola frondosa reaches 90.2%-102.5%; a solution to innocent treatment of pecan branches, outer shells and shells is provided, and a novel matrix for grifola frondosa cultivation is further found out.

Compositions and methods using direct MMP inhibitors for inhibiting photoaging of skin

Compositions and methods are provided for ameliorating various effects of UVA and UVB radiation from the sun. The compositions include an ingredient that prevents photoaging from MED and subMED radiation, namely a direct acting MMP (matrix metalloproteinase) inhibitor. The compositions can include another, indirect MMP inhibitor, such as a retinoid, certain other compounds (such as N-acetylcysteine, 2-furildioxime, and vitamin C), tetracyclines, and if a retinoid is used then in addition optional compounds that inhibit the CYP-26 (chytochrome P-450) mediated metabolism of retinoids such as ketoconazole and other azole compounds. In the method, the composition is applied prior to exposure to the sun; for direct acting MMP inhibitors, application should be just prior to exposure, and if indirect inhibitors such as retinoids are used in addition, then application of the indirect inhibitor should be at least about seven hours prior to exposure. Compounds that prevent erythema (skin reddening, sunburn) do not necessarily protect against UV-mediated elevation of MMP levels and activity, and similarly compounds that prevent UV-mediated elevation of MMP levels and activity are not necessarily effective against UV-induced erythema.
