Although THz radiation is naturally emitted by hot objects, the intensity levels are too weak to be considered as a practical THz source for most applications. Photonic crystal structures are used to modify the thermal emission peak associated with the standard Planck blackbody spectral distribution so that the THz region is dramatically enhanced. The photonic crystal core is preferably combined with variable Q defect cavities and a wave guiding and power combining structure so that the radiated THz energy is efficiently collected and directed to an output antenna. Higher THz emissions are realized by embedding a finer (higher frequency) photonic crystal structure within a coarser (lower frequency) structure.

The potholder is a hand protection device with a generally rectangular body having two outer surfaces, at least one layer of flexible insulating material disposed within the body, and two pockets disposed on one of the outer surfaces. The layers of the potholder provide sufficient thickness to reduce the amount of heat radiating through the potholder from the heated object to the hand. Each pocket covers about half the entire area of the potholder and is positioned so that the openings of the pockets face each other. The fingers of a hand are placed in one pocket and the thumb is inserted in the opposite pocket. The pockets retain the potholder on the hand and prevent accidental burns incurred by grazing a hot object. A number of horizontal rows of stitches are sewn between the pockets to form a crease that facilitates the folding of the potholder.

The carbon nanotube coatings are thin, flexible coatings exhibiting high thermal and chemical stability, strong adhesion, low weight, and high tensile strength. In one embodiment, the composition includes an insulator layer for thermally isolating the CNT coating and establishing thermal equilibrium with the surrounding environment through the absorption of thermal IR emitted from hot objects. Processes for preparing the carbon nanotube coated fabrics are also described herein.

A cooling apparatus includes a refrigerant tank containing boiling and condensing refrigerant and a radiator for cooling the refrigerant. Holes for mounting a substrate carrying the hot objects may be made on enlarged portions of a cover plate closing the refrigerant tank. The heat-receiving surface may be elevated from the rear surface of the refrigerant tank to avoid interference between other components mounted on the substrate and the rear surface of the refrigerant tank.
