Method and apparatus for measuring and monitoring optical properties based on a ring-resonator

A method and apparatus for performing refractive index, birefringence and optical activity measurements of a material such as a solid, liquid, gas or thin film is disclosed. The method and apparatus can also be used to measure the properties of a reflecting surface. The disclosed apparatus has an optical ring-resonator in the form of a fiber-loop resonator, or a race-track resonator, or any waveguide-ring or other structure with a closed optical path that constitutes a cavity. A sample is introduced into the optical path of the resonator such that the light in the resonator is transmitted through the sample and relative and/or absolute shifts of the resonance frequencies or changes of the characteristics of the transmission spectrum are observed. A change in the transfer characteristics of the resonant ring, such as a shift of the resonance frequency, is related to a sample's refractive index (refractive indices) and/or change thereof. In the case of birefringence measurements, rings that have modes with two (quasi)-orthogonal (linear or circular) polarization states are used to observe the relative shifts of the resonance frequencies. A reflecting surface may be introduced in a ring resonator. The reflecting surface can be raster-scanned for the purpose of height-profiling surface features. A surface plasmon resonance may be excited and phase changes of resonant light due to binding of analytes to the reflecting surface can be determined in the frequency domain.

Wireless mesh network parking measurement system

A real-time parking activity measurement system comprising multiple, self-powered, mesh networked wireless vehicle sensors, a collection device, and a host computer. The wireless mesh network architecture allows the wireless vehicle sensors to be more reliable and to be more energy efficient by at least an order of magnitude compare to traditional wireless point-to-point and star-topology architectures. This architecture also enables the expansion of the measurement area without any additional infrastructure besides the necessary addition of wireless vehicle sensors.

Applying data access activity measurements

A method is used in applying data access activity measurements. A slice relocation candidate list is generated which identifies slices to be relocated along with respective destination tier information. Slices in a pool are matched to respective matching tiers based on the slices' respective temperatures and tier preferences. Based on whether a current tier for a slice differs from the matching tier for the slice, the slice is listed in the relocation candidate list.

Novel method for measuring biological activity of biological pesticides

The invention relates to a novel method for measuring the biological activity of biological pesticides, which belongs to a novel method for measuring the biological activity. The novel method is characterized in that an agaragar layer is taken as a short-time cultivation nutrient source and a moisturizing material of a plant excised part in the measurement of biological activity; and meanwhile, green peach aphids are adopted as biological detecting materials to detect the biological activity of a detecting sample, and the insecticidal activity measurement is carried out according to the average reproduction quantity and the average death rate of the green peach aphides and the relevance of biological pesticides to be detected. The method solves the problems that plant leaves are dried easily and dehydrated generally in the insect bioassay by utilizing excised plant leaves to further influence the bioassay result and improves the accuracy of the experimental result. The method has simple and convenient operation, short experimental period and low cost. The invention can be applied to the biological activity measurement of biological pesticides and other pesticides of current varieties and the screening researches of new pesticides and is especially suitable for the bioassay of biological pesticides to insects with sucking mouth parts, such as aphides, and the like.

Measuring The Activity Of Proteases

A method and apparatuses for determining the total content of proteases by means of measuring their enzyme activity after previous deinhibition is disclosed. In biological samples, lysosomal proteases are completely (e.g. in blood serum) or partly (e.g. in tissue homogenates) inhibited. A method proposed for the deinhibition entails immersing a solid support material (e.g. nylon or nitrocellulose) as plastic strip to which is linked, covalently or by adsorption, an inhibitor-binding substance which binds the inhibitor corresponding to the protease more strongly than the protease in the sample for measurement. After the deinhibition has taken place, the plastic strip is removed from the liquid sample for measurement, and the sample for measurement is passed on for measurement of the enzyme activity. Fluorogenic substrates from which the fluorogen 7-amino-4-trifluoromethylcoumarin is eliminated proved to be particularly advantageous for the activity measurement. These substrates make it possible for the sensitivity on measurement in microtitre plates with a fluorescence reader to be at least 10 times higher compared with conventional AMC substrates in blood serum, and thus for the fluorimetric determination of such enzyme activities in blood serum to be efficient with this measuring arrangement which is widely used in clinical laboratories.
