Beacon signaling in a wireless system

InactiveUS6985498B2Improve and optimize system performanceImprove throughputPower managementFrequency diversityEngineeringData transmission
A few high power tones used for synchronization and / or other purposes are transmitted in a FDM system during a period of time, e.g., a symbol transmission time period. During normal data transmission symbol periods signals are transmitted using at least 10 tones, e.g., per symbol time. Less than 5 high power signals are transmitted in a symbol time with at least 80% the maximum total transmitter power transmitted being allocated to the high power signals where the maximum total transmitter power is determined from a period of time which may includes one or more data and / or high power tone transmission periods. When the high power tones are transmitted at most 20% of transmitter power is available for transmitting other tones with the power normally being distributed among multiple tones. Normally some tones which would be transmitted in a symbol time go unused during transmission of the high power signals.

Intra- and/or inter-system interference reducing systems and methods for satellite communications systems

A first radio signal is received via a first satellite reception path, for example, an antenna or spot beam, which serves a satellite cell. The received first radio signal includes a desired satellite uplink signal transmitted from a first source using a frequency assigned to the satellite cell and an interfering signal transmitted from at least one second source using the frequency assigned to the satellite cell. A second radio signal is received via a second satellite reception path, for example, via another antenna or spot beam of the system and / or via a satellite antenna beam of another system. The second radio signal includes a measure of the interfering signal. The first and second radio signals are processed to recover the desired satellite uplink signal.

Multiple access wireless communications system using a multisector configuration

Power control methods and apparatus for use in a sectorized cell of an OFDM communications system are described. Each sector of a cell uses the same frequencies and transmission times and is synchronized with the other sectors in the cell in terms of tone frequencies used at any given time and symbol transmission times. Tones are allocated to channels in each cell in the same manner so that each channel in a sector has a corresponding channel in another sector. Power differences between channels in different sectors are maintained to be within a pre-selected power difference. Different channels in a cell are assigned different power levels. Wireless terminals are assigned to channels based on channel feedback information. Wireless terminals with poor channel conditions are allocated to higher power channels than wireless terminals with good channel conditions. Lower power channels often include more tones per symbol time than high power channels.

Packet Loss Concealment Based On Forced Waveform Alignment After Packet Loss

ActiveUS20080046235A1Reduce and eliminate destructive interferenceReduce and eliminate interferenceSpeech analysisPacket loss concealmentSpeech sound
A packet loss concealment method and system is described that attempts to reduce or eliminate destructive interference that can occur when an extrapolated waveform representing a lost segment of a speech or audio signal is merged with a good segment after a packet loss. This is achieved by guiding a waveform extrapolation that is performed to replace the bad segment using a waveform available in the first good segment or segments after the packet loss. In another aspect of the invention, a selection is made between a packet loss concealment method that performs the aforementioned guided waveform extrapolation and one that does not. The selection may be made responsive to determining whether the first good segment or segments after the packet loss are available and also to whether a segment preceding the lost segment and the first good segment following the lost segment are deemed voiced.

Systems and methods for handovers between base radios

A system and method for reducing power consumption and interference in a communications system that has multiple base radios. A base radio controller assigns priorities to the base radios in the system. When higher priority base radios have excess capacity, intracell handovers are used to consolidate communications from lower priority base radios to higher priority base radios. After transferring communications to higher priority base radios, the lower priority base radios can attenuate or shut off their transmitted signal in order to reduce or eliminate all the interference they cause other base stations in the system, and reduce transmission power requirements.

Method of coordinated wireless downlink transmission

ActiveUS20080299981A1Reduce Inter-Cell InterferenceMaximize specified ratePower managementTelephonic communicationDirty paper codingOptimization problem
To reduce intercell interference, a method of coherently coordinated downlink transmission in a wireless network involves coordinating transmissions from a plurality of base stations to a plurality of wireless units, for coherent, reinforced reception of the transmitted signals at the wireless units. Thus, transmissions from the base stations are coordinated such that signals received at each wireless unit's particular location constructively add, but cancel out at other locations. The signals are generated based on a zero-forcing operation, e.g., by applying zero-forcing complex antenna weight vectors to data symbols designated for transmission to the wireless units. For fairness, the signals are transmitted at no less than a guaranteed common rate. A convex optimization problem (which incorporates a per-base station power constraint or a per-transmission antenna power constraint) is solved to maximize the guaranteed common rate. Dirty paper coding may also be employed.
