Plural conduit replaceable outer support structure for radial flow system

Replaceable outer support structure 38 for a particulate material bed 70 in a radial flow system comprises a plurality of hollow conduits 50, 250, 260, at least some of which have a generally trapezoidal cross-section. The conduits are arranged in a ring around the inside wall surface 39 of the vessel 42 and have flat or slightly concave inner wall surfaces 52 formed of segments of vertically extending screen members which have slots or openings 86 which provide uniform flow through the uniform thickness particulate bed which they help define The side walls 54, 56 of the conduits extend generally radially outwardly to engage the inner surface 39 of the outside wall 40 of the vessel and at least those of them which have a trapezoidal cross-section have their side walls formed at an included angle α which is less than if they extended radially relative to the axis of the vessel. An embodiment having alternating generally trapezoidal 250 and generally rectangular cross-sections 260 for the conduit members maximizes the total internal flow area of the ring of conduits as compared to an embodiment in which all of the conduit members have a trapezoidal shape, while still allowing the inward movement of individual conduit members during installation or replacement operations.

Split venturi, axially-rotated valve

The present invention provides an axially-rotated valve which permits increased flow rates and lower pressure drop (characterized by a lower loss coefficient) by using an axial eccentric split venturi with two portions where at least one portion is rotatable with respect to the other portion. The axially-rotated valve typically may be designed to avoid flow separation and/or cavitation at full flow under a variety of conditions. Similarly, the valve is designed, in some embodiments, to produce streamlined flow within the valve. A typical cross section of the eccentric split venturi may be non-axisymmetric such as a semicircular cross section which may assist in both throttling capabilities and in maximum flow capacity using the design of the present invention. Such a design can include applications for freeze resistant axially-rotated valves and may be fully-opened and fully-closed in one-half of a complete rotation. An internal wide radius elbow typically connected to a rotatable portion of the eccentric venturi may assist in directing flow with lower friction losses. A valve actuator may actuate in an axial manner yet be uniquely located outside of the axial flow path to further reduce friction losses. A seal may be used between the two portions that may include a peripheral and diametrical seal in the same plane.

Phase conjugate relay mirror apparatus for high energy laser system and method

A system for directing electromagnetic energy. The inventive system includes a first subsystem mounted on a first platform for transmitting a beam of the electromagnetic energy through a medium and a second subsystem mounted on a second platform for redirecting the beam. In accordance with the invention, the second platform is mobile relative to the first platform. In the illustrative embodiment, the beam is a high-energy laser beam. The first subsystem includes a phase conjugate mirror in optical alignment with a laser amplifier. The first subsystem further includes a beam director in optical alignment with the amplifier and a platform track sensor coupled thereto. In the illustrative embodiment, the second subsystem includes a co-aligned master oscillator, outcoupler, and target track sensor which are fixedly mounted to a stabilized platform, a beam director, and a platform track sensor. In the best mode, the stable platform is mounted for independent articulation relative to the beam director. A first alternative embodiment of the second subsystem includes first and second beam directors. The first beam director is adapted to receive the transmitted beam and the second beam director is adapted to redirect the received beam. In accordance with a second alternative embodiment, an optical fiber is provided for coupling the beam between the first platform and the second platform.

Floating breakwater capable of giving consideration to inner oscillation water column wave energy conversion function and method

The invention discloses a floating breakwater and a method capable of giving consideration to an inner oscillation water column wave energy conversion function. In the floating breakwater capable of giving consideration to the inner oscillation water column wave energy conversion function, the exterior of a floating body is anchored into a seabed through an anchor rope connection sinking block; anoverhauling channel is arranged at the upper part of the floating body; and wave energy conversion related configurations are arranged in the floating body, and comprise an air chamber, an air turbine, a turbine bracket, a linkage shaft, a generator, a cushion layer and an air chamber inner water body. A realization method of the floating breakwater capable of giving consideration to the inner oscillation water column wave energy conversion function comprises the steps of a breakwater arrangement process, a process of the floating body eliminating the wave effect, a wave energy conversion output process and an overhauling process. On the basis of maintaining traditional wave retaining and eliminating functions of the floating breakwater, the wave energy conversion function is realized byusing the oscillation design of water in an air chamber, and the power output in the wave energy conversion process is continuous, so that the reliability is good; the stress design of the breakwateris reasonable, and the durability is excellent; and meanwhile, the construction cost is low, and the engineering production advantages are obvious.

Regulation valve

The present invention concerns a regulating valve (1) of the type preferably used for dynamic regulation of fluid-borne systems, such as central heating systems in housing and industrial buildings or cooling facilities, where the control valve is provided with a valve housing (2) with an inlet (3) and an outlet (4), where a valve insert (5) with an orifice means (12) is provided in the valve housing (2) by which the flow in the regulating valve can be regulated, and where additionally there are detecting means (6, 7) for detecting either supply pressure or discharge pressure and another pressure, respectively. The regulating valve is provided with a modular valve insert (5) which at least includes a differential pressure regulator (9), a venturi (10), a throttle device (11) and a coupling member (13) for an actuator, where the various modules are made with interacting joining means, preferably with snap-action joints. A valve insert (5) may thus be built up of respective modules, where the modules are selected individually with the most suitable specifications for the individual task. It is thus not required to make as many different combinations of valve inserts since they are combined modularly according to need.
