Stitched pole write element with a T-shaped pole tip portion

A T-shaped pole tip portion of an upper pole of a write element for a magnetic disk drive is provided. One end of the pole tip portion, constituting the bottom of the “T,” forms a narrow nose segment at an air bearing surface, while a wing segment at the opposite end of the pole tip portion constitutes the cross-bar top of the “T.” A transition segment extends between the nose segment and the wing segment. A yoke portion of the upper pole includes a surface that is parallel to the air bearing surface and recessed therefrom by a P3R depth. The transition segment does not widen significantly until after the P3R depth, accordingly, the wing segment is recessed from the air bearing surface by more than the P3R depth.

Key distribution in a conditional access system

Methods and apparatus for key distribution in a conditional access system, assuming that the set of all user nodes which the system can accommodate is a complete set, and a subset is composed of all user nodes or part of user nodes. One method comprises: decomposing said subset into at least one secondary subset; assigning a different user key to each secondary subset, each said user key being transmitted to all users in a corresponding secondary subset; encrypting an entitlement key by using each said user key so as to generate a cipher text corresponding to each said secondary subset; and combining said cipher text to generate a media key control block and transmitting said media key control block to all users in said subset. Since a classification method of a binary tree and a multiple tree is used, the invention can save a lot of network resources.

Apparatus and Method for Laying Down, Abandoning, and Recovering a Pipe on the Sea Floor

Disclosed are a method and apparatus for laying down, abandoning and / or recovering a pipe on the sea floor. During lay-down and abandonment, the pipe is lowered by a high capacity winch to an intermediate depth, at which the loading exerted by the pipe has dropped to within the rated capacity of a low capacity winch, to which the loading is then transferred. The high capacity winch line is then recovered to the attendant vessel and the pipe lowered to the sea floor using the low capacity winch. Pipe recovery is essentially a reversal of the above procedure. In this way, the length of the line of the high capacity winch is considerably reduced, which reduces the winch size and hence cost.

Lubricant with non-terminal functional groups

Lubricant with non-terminal functional groups. The location of the functional groups minimizes free chain length and molecular weight of a lubricant while simultaneously maximizing evaporation temperature. The locations of the functional groups to the backbone of the molecule of the lubricant allows for shorter lengths of free backbone length between functional groups attached to a lubricated surface. The lubricant lubricates mechanical devices including hard disk drives.

Clamp for flexible tubing

A clamp assembly (10,110) for flexible tubing (100), having a housing (12,112) and a clamp (14,114) slidable within the housing between first and second positions, to occlude the tubing when the clamp is in the second position. Both the clamp and the housing include tubing-engaging ribs (30,60;130,160) to compress the tubing when the clamp is moved from its first or open position to its second or occluding position, with the tubing-engaging ribs being axially offset to force the tubing (100) into a tortuous path causing occlusion thereof. A pair of latch arms (62) extend forwardly from the clamp to follow respective channels (32) formed into housing side walls (20,22), with latch arm free ends (64) extending beyond the end of the housing to become latchingly engaged therewith when the clamp is moved into its occluding position, and also to be exposed to be manually engaged for delatching when desired.

Method of forming a FET having ultra-low on-resistance and low gate charge

In accordance with an exemplary embodiment of the invention, a substrate of a first conductivity type silicon is provided. A substrate cap region of the first conductivity type silicon is formed such that a junction is formed between the substrate cap region and the substrate. A body region of a second conductivity type silicon is formed such that a junction is formed between the body region and the substrate cap region. A trench extending through at least the body region is then formed. A source region of the first conductivity type is then formed in an upper portion of the body region. An out-diffusion region of the first conductivity type is formed in a lower portion of the body region as a result of one or more temperature cycles such that a spacing between the source region and the out-diffusion region defines a channel length of the field effect transistor.

Two-stroke internal combustion engine

Crankcase scavenged two-stroke internal combustion engine (1), in which a piston ported air passage is arranged between an air inlet (2) and the upper part of a number of transfer ducts (3, 3′). The air passage is arranged from an air inlet (2) equipped with a restriction valve (4), controlled by at least one engine parameter, for instance the carburetor throttle control. The air inlet extends via at least one connecting duct (6, 6′) to at least one connecting port (8, 8′) in the engine's cylinder wall (12). The connecting port (8, 8′) is arranged so that it in connection with piston positions at the top dead center is connected with flow paths (10, 10′) embodied in the piston (13), which extend to the upper part of a number of transfer ducts (3, 3′). Each flow path through the cylinder and piston is to a great extent arranged in the cylinder's lateral direction, on the one hand in that the connecting port (8, 8′) and adjacent scavenging port (31, 31′) of the cylinder are shifted sideways in relation to each other along the periphery of the cylinder wall (12), and on the other hand in that the transfer ducts (3, 3′) of the cylinder are running essentially in the cylinder's lateral direction away from each transfer port (31, 31′) respectively, i.e. tangentially in relation to the circumference of the cylinder wall (12).

A plug component having a cylindrical body portion including a plurality of male contacts includes a tubular end portion that extends axially within the groove to connect the male and female contacts, respectively. A fastening sleeve is rotatably mounted on the plug between the outer surface thereof and the socket outer portion, whereby external screw threads on the sleeve engage internal threads on the socket tubular portion, thereby to fasten together the plug and socket components. In order to reduce the assembly time, the number and length of the screw threads on one of the sleeve and socket components is less than the number and length of the screw threads of the other component.

Pre-transcoding content items

A content management system pre-transcodes portions of content items provided for storage. When a content item is uploaded to the content management system for storage, the content management system stores the content item in an original format. The content management system transcodes a portion of the content item from the original format to a streaming format. The content management system stores the transcoded portion and makes the content item available for access. When a client device requests the content item from the content management system, the content management system first sends by streaming to the client device the stored transcoded portion in the streaming format. During the sending of the transcoded portion, the content management system transcodes a remainder of the content item that has not been transcoded to the streaming format. The content management system sends the transcoded remainder of the content item to the client device.

A continuously variable mechanical transmission comprised of two wheels, either friction or toothed, of which one or both are in the shape of hemispheres. A hemisphere wheel is mounted through a bearing on a mounting with two pivots attached to the outer race of the bearing, allowing the wheel to rotate around two perpendicular accesses. The center of the wheel is attached to the shaft through a single or double universal joint or a flexible shaft. The other wheel can be a regular narrow wheel fixed to the second shaft. By rotating the hemisphere wheel around the mounting pivots the diameter of the wheel engaged with the second wheel is increased or decreased allowing the transmission rate to vary.

Activated carbon fiber cigarette filter

A cigarette filter for removing gas phase constituents from mainstream cigarette smoke as the smoke is drawn through the filter primarily comprises an activated carbon fiber filter section including a bundle of activated carbon fibers. Particulate adsorbent materials such as granules, beads or course powders may be dispersed amongst the activated carbon fibers to aid in removal of the gas phase constituents. Additionally, the activated carbon fiber filter section may be used in combination with a separate bed or beds of particulate adsorbent material. In one embodiment, the activated carbon fibers are positioned within a helical groove on the outside of a threaded rod within the activated carbon fiber filter section. Relatively smaller amounts of activated carbon fibers produce the same smoke constituent reduction as larger amounts of particulate adsorbent material.
