A system and method for containing plasma and forming a Field Reversed Configuration (FRC) magnetic topology are described in which plasma ions are contained magnetically in stable, non-adiabatic orbits in the FRC. Further, the electrons are contained electrostatically in a deep energy well, created by tuning an externally applied magnetic field. The simultaneous electrostatic confinement of electrons and magnetic confinement of ions avoids anomalous transport and facilitates classical containment of both electrons and ions. In this configuration, ions and electrons may have adequate density and temperature so that upon collisions they are fused together by nuclear force, thus releasing fusion energy. Moreover, the fusion fuel plasmas that can be used with the present confinement system and method are not limited to neutronic fuels only, but also advantageously include advanced fuels.

A system and apparatus for controlled fusion in a field reversed configuration (FRC) magnetic topology and conversion of fusion product energies directly to electric power. Preferably, plasma ions are magnetically confined in the FRC while plasma electrons are electrostatically confined in a deep energy well, created by tuning an externally applied magnetic field. In this configuration, ions and electrons may have adequate density and temperature so that upon collisions they are fused together by the nuclear force, thus forming fusion products that emerge in the form of an annular beam. Energy is removed from the fusion product ions as they spiral past electrodes of an inverse cyclotron converter. Advantageously, the fusion fuel plasmas that can be used with the present confinement and energy conversion system include advanced (aneutronic) fuels.

Method and system for controlled fusion reactions

Disclosed is a system for extracting energy from controlled fusion reactions. The system includes a central target chamber for receiving fusion target material. A plurality of energy drivers are arranged around the target chamber so as to supply energy to fusion target material in the chamber to initiate a controlled fusion reaction of the materials releasing energy in the forms of fusion plasma and heat. A plurality of structures for extracting energy from the fusion reaction are provided, and comprise devices to extract high voltage DC power from the fusion plasma; and means to extract thermal energy from the central target chamber. Power to the energy drivers may be supplied from high voltage DC power extracted from the fusion reactions. The energy drivers may use an Apodizing filter to impart a desired shape to the wavefront of the driving energy for causing the fusion reactions, to avoid hydrodynamic instabilities.

An In Orbit Transportation & Recovery System (IOSTAR(TM)) (10) is disclosed. One preferred embodiment of the present invention comprises a space tug powered by a nuclear reactor (19). The IOSTAR(TM) includes a collapsible boom (11) connected at one end to a propellant tank (13) which stores fuel for an electric propulsion system (12). This end of the boom (11) is equipped with docking hardware (14) that is able to grasp and hold a satellite (15) and as a means to refill the tank (13). Radiator panels (16) mounted on the boom (11) dissipate heat from the reactor (19). A radiation shield (20) is situated next to the reactor (19) to protect the satellite payload (15) at the far end of the boom (11). The IOSTAR(TM) (10) will be capable of accomplishing rendezvous and docking maneuvers which will enable it to move spacecraft between a low Earth parking orbit and positions in higher orbits or to other locations in our Solar System.

High efficiency radio isotope energy converters using both charge and kinetic energy of emitted particles

An electrical energy generator with improved efficiency has a base on which is mounted an elastically deformable micromechanical element that has a section that is free to be displaced toward the base. An absorber of radioactively emitted particles is formed on the base or the displaceable section of the deformable element and a source is formed on the other of the displaceable section or the base facing the absorber across a small gap. The radioactive source emits charged particles such as electrons, resulting in a buildup of charge on the absorber, drawing the absorber and source together and storing mechanical energy as the deformable element is bent. When the force between the absorber and the source is sufficient to bring the absorber into effective electrical contact with the source, discharge of the charge between the source and absorber allows the deformable element to spring back, releasing the mechanical energy stored in the element. An electrical generator of improved efficiency includes a first energy source comprising a piezoelectric transducer secured to the deformable element to convert the released mechanical energy to electrical energy. A second energy source comprises a betavoltaic cell carried on the deformable element or electron collector cantilever beam to provide a direct current (DC) power output that can be added to the piezo-electric circuit's alternating current (AC) power output, such that there is a continuous power output that can be used to provide power to electronic circuits.

Methods of pulsed nuclear energy generation using piston-based systems

The invention describes a method of nuclear energy transformation into electric and / or mechanical energy by triggering criticality in a working cylinder by an approach of a piston with a neutron reflector layer to fissile heat elements. Optionally, liquid moderator should fill the heating element to provide for an additional condition of such triggering. The pulse reaction initiates a heat cycle by expanding working fluid, extracting mechanical work and compressing the working fluid using lower amount of energy. The energy released in reaction can drive a column of water as a liquid piston propelling a highly efficient hydraulic turbine and producing a simple economical method of energy conversion. The piston movements can also be converted in laser and electromagnetic pulses. Self-regulation of nuclear reaction by a reflector piston linked to a resilient spring can be used in marine propulsion. In one method, the approach of the reflector piston triggers a reaction that evaporates water in the pressure chamber and produces a reactive thrust in a noozle. A fraction of the steam is diverted to produce steam bubble envelope on the surface of the vessel to minimize drag. Another fraction of the diverted steam drives a pump, pumping sea water into the heating elements. Other practical and novel applications of the method are disclosed.

Also described is a nuclear fusion reactor which is configured for generating electrical energy.
