A cup and plug assembly of a base for a polymer based ammunition cartridge case body includes a cylindrical sleeve joined to the base. The base includes a plug molded over a cup. The cup includes a first annular cup portion extending in a first direction from a web formed therein and a second annular cup portion extending in a second direction from the web opposite to the first direction. The plug having a first annular portion that completely encompasses an outer circumferential surface of the cup and a second annular portion that extends from the first annular portion. The second annular portion of the plug completely covering an inner surface of the first annular cup portion of the cup. The cup preferably being formed from a metal or a suitable non-metal and the plug being formed from a suitable polymer that is injection molded over the cup.

A lead free environmentally friendly ammunition which may be tailored within a range of compositions for specific uses, but generally comprises a mixture of metal powder and mineral filler in combination with a water soluble binder plastic resin and a lubricant. A method for manufacturing an enamel-coated bullet is described. The method starts with casting a bullet from a metal material and quenching the cast bullet. After the bullet cools, applying a lubricant to the bullet and sizing the bullet to the appropriate caliber and rinsing the bullets in a solvent. Thereafter, applying an enamel coating to the bullets. The coating uses about 1 part by volume lacquer thinner, about 1.5 parts by volume hardener, and about 2.5 parts by volume epoxy paint. The process continues by contacting the bullets with a moving fluid for a sufficient time that they become dry and heating the bullets in an oven at a temperature of between 150 and 250° F. for a time between 20 and 45 minutes. Finally, the process involves applying a lubricant to the coated bullet and resizing the bullet to the appropriate caliber.

A jacketed bullet having a penetrator constructed of a hard material in line with a slug having a lower modulus. At least a portion of both the slug and the penetrator are then encased by a metal jacket. A plurality of circumferentially spaced and axially extending flutes are formed along the slug and possibly the penetrator. These flutes receive deformation of the jacket upon firing of the bullet into a rifled gun bore to thereby reduce friction between the bullet and the gun bore during operation.

An aerially deployed illumination system is provided which may be remotely operated or preprogrammed to illuminate a designated target, such as a geographic area, vehicle, or personnel. In particular, a remotely controlled UAV having an illumination system disposed thereon is provided, the illumination system comprised of a concentrated light source and light movement apparatus operable to rapidly scan the target with the light source, thereby providing an illusion of a large area of illumination. Preferably, a line is created from the light source, the line being rapidly moved over the target in specific patterns and at specific frequencies. The system may further include a plurality of UAV's capable of ad hoc networking, so as to illuminate both large areas, as well as stationary and moving targets. Fine-grained (average grain size 1 nm to 1,000 nm) metallic coatings optionally containing solid particulates dispersed therein are disclosed. The fine-grained metallic materials are significantly harder and stronger than conventional coatings of the same chemical composition due to Hall-Petch strengthening and have low linear coefficients of thermal expansion (CTEs). The invention provides means for matching the CTE of the fine-grained metallic coating to the one of the substrate by adjusting the composition of the alloy and / or by varying the chemistry and volume fraction of particulates embedded in the coating. The fine-grained metallic coatings are particularly suited for strong and lightweight articles, precision molds, sporting goods, automotive parts and components exposed to thermal cycling. The low CTEs and the ability to match the CTEs of the fine-grained metallic coatings with the CTEs of the substrate minimize dimensional changes during thermal cycling and prevent premature failure.
