Methods of making a silicon oxide layer on a substrate are described. The methods may include forming the silicon oxide layer on the substrate in a reaction chamber by reacting an atomic oxygen precursor and a silicon precursor and depositing reaction products on the substrate. The atomic oxygen precursor is generated outside the reaction chamber. The methods also include heating the silicon oxide layer at a temperature of about 600° C. or less, and exposing the silicon oxide layer to an induced coupled plasma. Additional methods are described where the deposited silicon oxide layer is cured by exposing the layer to ultra-violet light, and also exposing the layer to an induced coupled plasma.

A system for sanitizing an enclosed structure comprises a first sensor, a second sensor, a third sensor, a germicidal ultraviolet light source, a motor, and a controller. The first sensor detects the presence of humans or animals within the enclosed structure. The second sensor detects the position of at least one door of the enclosed structure. The third sensor detects tampering with the system. The ultraviolet light source provides electromagnetic radiation in the ultraviolet range. The motor moves the ultraviolet light source from an inactive position to an active position and from the active position to the inactive position. The controller receives inputs from the first sensor, the second sensor, and the third sensor, and transmits outputs to the ultraviolet light source and the motor. When the controller receives signals that no humans or animals are present in the enclosed structure and that the door is in a closed position, the controller transmits a signal to the motor to move the ultraviolet light source from the inactive position to the active position and a signal to activate the ultraviolet light source. If humans or animals are detected to be present in the enclosed structure or if the door is detected to be open, then the controller deactivates the ultraviolet light source and repositions the ultraviolet light source.

Apparatuses are disclosed which include a discharge lamp configured to emit ultraviolet light, a power circuit configured to operate the discharge lamp, and a reflector system configured to redirect ultraviolet light emitted from the discharge lamp. In some embodiments, the apparatuses include a support structure containing the power circuit and supporting the discharge lamp. In some of such embodiments, the reflector system is configured to redirect ultraviolet light propagating away from the support structure to a region exterior to the apparatus and which is between approximately 2 feet and approximately 4 feet from a floor of a room in which the apparatus is arranged. In other embodiments, the reflector system may be additionally or alternatively configured to redirect ultraviolet light propagating away from the support structure to encircle an exterior surface of the apparatus. An approach for the treatment of surfaces in public places with ultraviolet light is disclosed. In one embodiment, a disinfection illuminator having ultraviolet radiation sources can irradiate a number of contact surfaces. A control unit can control the ultraviolet irradiation of the contact surfaces. The disinfection illuminator is suitable for a wide variety of devices that are used by the general public. Gas station pumps, door knobs, key pads, and bathrooms are illustrative of examples of some devices and places having commonly-used surfaces that can be treated by the disinfection illuminator.

The apparatus includes: a target nozzle that injects a target material toward a plasma generation point; an electric charge supply unit that charges the injected target material; an acceleration unit that accelerates the charged target material; a laser oscillator that applies a laser beam to the target material at the plasma generation point to generate plasma; and electromagnets that form a magnetic field at the plasma generation point such that the magnetic field has substantially straight lines of magnetic flux in substantially parallel with a traveling direction of the target material in the track of the target material.
