Golf club head

A metal wood golf club head is provided having a front face with an impact zone including a compliant area. Preferably, the compliant area is disposed in an upper portion of the front face. Preferably, a through-slit is provided in the front face to form the compliant area. The through-slit may be an elongated slot substantially parallel to a top of the front face and may include an elastomeric reinforcement. The compliant area creates an ultra-low center of gravity relative to the geometric face center, resulting in higher launch angles and spin rate ratios. The compliant area upwardly shifts the coefficient of restitution to the geometric center of the face and thereby increases the carry distance of a golf ball hit off the club head.

Modulated metal removal using localized wet etching

An apparatus for wet etching metal from a semiconductor wafer comprises a wafer holder for rotating a wafer and a plurality of nozzles for applying separate flow patterns of etching liquid to the surface of the wafer. The flow patterns impact the wafer in distinct band-like impact zones. The flow pattern of etching liquid from at least one nozzle is modulated during a total etching time control the cumulative etching rate in one local etch region relative to the cumulative etching rate in one or more other local etch regions. Some embodiments include a lower etch chamber and an upper rinse chamber separated by a horizontal splash shield. Some embodiments include a retractable vertical splash shield used to prevent splashing of etching liquid onto the inside walls of a treatment container. An etch-liquid delivery system includes a plurality of nozzle flow paths having corresponding nozzle flow resistances, and a plurality of drain flow paths having corresponding drain flow resistances. Nozzle flow resistances and drain flow resistances are matched so that switching the flow from a nozzle to a corresponding drain flow path does not change the flow rate of etching liquid through other nozzles. A non-wafer-contacting measuring device measures a metal thickness on a rotating semiconductor wafer during metal wet etching by immersing a plurality of electrodes in etching liquid in close proximity to the wafer surface of the rotating wafer and determining electrical resistance between a plurality of electrodes.

Engineered residual stress in golf clubs

InactiveUS8608590B2Surprising and improved result in performanceShorten the timeGolf clubsLaser beam welding apparatusHigh intensityGolf Ball
A method of manufacturing a driver, or other types of golf club, includes inducing residual compressive stress by high intensity laser shock peening to form an array of laser shock peened impact zones on the club face. Laser pulses having irradiance greater than 4 GW / cm2, with spot size greater than 4 mm2 are used, including a pulse with on the order of 16 ns, with spot size greater than 9 mm2. Residual compressive stress of more than 400 MPa penetrating with a depth of more than 0.2 mm are imparted, without increased hardening in or damage to the face of the club. Laser shock peening a pattern that covers an interior area leaves the perimeter unpeened, inducing a stress gradient between interior area and the perimeter of the club face. Multiple layers of arrays of laser shock impact zones are applied on the club. The technology is readily applied to assembled club heads.

Composite lift gate deformable section

A lift gate having a deformable section which allows the lift gate to deform rather than break during a low speed impact event. The lift gate has a deformable section located between an inner panel and an outer panel. The deformable section is able to deform during a low speed impact event against the outer panel, thereby preventing the inner panel from receiving any of the impact. This allows the inner panel to be significantly more rigid than the outer panel and the deformable section, and, therefore, provides the necessary structural support for the lift gate while withstanding collisions on the Impact Zone.
