Skylight membrane with diverter

The present invention 10 discloses an elastomeric skylight membrane molded as a single piece comprising a planar element 18 for sealably engaging roof sheathing 26 and a centrally positioned collar element 20 for sealably engaging the rough opening framing members 34. The skylight collar membrane 20 is inserted over the framed rough opening for a skylight 16 having the elastomeric collar element tightly engaging the framing members 34 and of substantially the same height as the rough opening frame members. The planar element 18 engages the roof sheathing 26 and is fixedly attached thereto by any means well known within the art. Positioned across the up slope side 36 of the collar 20 is an angularly protruding edge 32 for preventing water from wicking between the skylight frame 34 and the skylight membrane 10. To prevent lateral flow from the up slope edge 36 of the skylight 16 there are two spaced apart ridges 22 transversely positioned to the turnback collar sides extending above and below the horizontal edge 30 of the up slope side 36. The diverter ridges 22 spaced away form the turnback side 32 obstruct lateral water flow returning it to a downhill flow. The planar element 18 further has a bead 38 on three sides near its periphery that will redirect any water that has accumulated between the skylight membrane and shingles to a downward flow.

Moisture resistant microphone

Embodiments of the invention provide microphone assemblies which are resistant to moisture. One embodiment provides a microphone assembly comprising a housing, a diaphragm disposed in the housing and a backplate disposed in the housing. The housing includes a sound inlet port for the entry of sound waves. The backplate includes a surface and an electret portion having an embedded permanent charge. The diaphragm is configured to vibrate in response to sound waves entering the housing. The vibrations of the diaphragm interact with the electret portion to produce an electrical signal associated with the sound waves entering the housing. A hydrophobic coating can be applied to one or both of the backplate and diaphragm surfaces so as to reduce condensation and / or wetting of the backplate. This minimizes neutralization of an electric field of the backplate surface from condensation preserving the field and the function of the microphone in humid environments.

A ferrule boot for attachment to an optical fiber ribbon has a channel extending therethrough. The channel has at its distal end a first tapered lead-in section sized and dimensioned such that the optical fiber ribbon with the internal optical fibers stripped and exposed is insertable through the ferrule boot. The first tapered lead-in section is connected to a second tapered section, and the second tapered section prevents adhesives used to affix the optical fiber ribbon to a ferrule from wicking to the outside of the ferrule boot. The channel has a substantially straight section fitting intimately over the outside of the optical fiber ribbon to center and guide the exposed optical fibers to the center of the proximal end of the channel. In an embodiment, the ferrule boot also has a lip member disposed proximate to the proximal end of the channel to help seal the adhesive and ease insertion. Additionally, the lip may also prevent withdrawal of the optical fiber ribbon. In another embodiment, the ferrule boot also has a vent hole to allow air or other gases trapped in the ferrule boot cavity to vent to the ambient atmosphere.

Diagnostic Testing Process and Apparatus Incorporating Controlled Sample Flow

An apparatus (10) and method for use in a vertical flow-through assay process is characterised by applying pressure to a sample to force the sample through a reaction / capture membrane (12), to which one or more ligands are bound, at a controlled rate. Typically, the method includes a pre-incubation step in which the sample and a detection analyte typically an antibody bound to colloidal gold or a fluorescent tag bind together The pre-incubation step typically takes place in a chamber (26) spaced above the capture membrane (12). The base of the chamber is defined by a porous hydrophobic frit (34) typically formed from polyethylene. It is preferred that the chamber (26) is defined by the upper part of a cylinder (24) extending from a seal (30) compressing the reaction membrane (12) against an absorbent pad (28). The seal (30) has the effect of compressing tie reaction membrane and preventing wicking of the sample in the lateral direction outside of the circular seal. A piston (28) compresses air located in the chamber above atmospheric pressure to farce the sample to pass through the hydrophobic frit (34). Alternatively, a hydraulic actuator (60) may directly act on the sample to force the sample through the frit and reaction membrane at a predetermined rate.
