Technique for using heat flow management to treat brain disorders

A method of treating a brain disorder by heat transfer from brain tissue comprising the steps of surgically cutting a heat transfer aperture into a patient's skull, thereby exposing a predetermined portion of patient's brain; surgically implanting into said heat transfer aperture a heat pump having one or more electrical sensor elements and one or more temperature sensor elements; surgically implanting a heat transfer management unit in a body cavity of said patient such that a micro controller of the heat transfer management unit is connected to one or more activity sensor elements and one or more temperature sensor elements contacting brain tissue and connecting the heat transfer management unit to said heat pump via a lead bundle. Optionally, the heat transfer unit may be located external to the patient's body. Responsive to signals from one or more activity or temperature sensor elements, mathematical algorithms of the heat transfer management unit determine abnormal brain activity, causing the heat pump to remove heat from the brain tissue into a heat sink, thereby cooling the predetermined portion of the patient's brain. This technique utilizes acute hypothermia by means of a Peltier cooler or similar device to cool the brain temperature to reduce or prevent seizure initiation and/or propagation. The method may be used in association with brain stimulation and/or drug application to acutely avoid the occurrence of a seizure episode.

Electro-optical device, driving method of electro-optical device, driving circuit of electro-optical device and electronic apparatus

Aspects of the invention can provide a driving circuit of an electro-optical device that can reduce or prevent bad influences of a transverse electric field and a crosstalk. There can be provided a driving circuit of an electro-optical device, the driving circuit generating timing signals for supplying scanning signals to a display unit in which pixels can be formed corresponding to the respective intersections between a plurality of data lines and a plurality of scanning lines arranged in a matrix shape and the switching elements provided in the pixels are turned on by the scanning signals supplied to the scanning lines, so that the image signal supplied to the data lines are applied to the pixel electrodes of the pixels through the switching elements to drive the display unit. The driving circuit can include a transmission clock generating device for generating a transmission clock for sequentially transmitting the scanning signals to the scanning lines in synchronism with a signal having a frequency equal to a horizontal frequency of input image signals and outputting the transmission clock as a timing signal, a vertical reset signal generating device for generating a vertical reset signal synchronized with the transmission clock generated in close proximity of a vertical synchronizing signal of the input image signals, a scanning start pulse generating device for generating a scanning start pulse defining a start timing of a vertical scanning operation on the basis of the transmission clock and the vertical reset signal and outputting the scanning start pulse as a timing signal, and a writing image generating device for generating writing image signals to be supplied to the data lines by delaying the input image signals on the basis of the transmission clock and the vertical reset signal.

Semiconductor circuit device and data processing system

Occurrence of power supply noise arising in connection with a step-down action at the time of turning on power supply is to be restrained. A step-down unit is provided with a switched capacitor type step-down circuit and a series regulator type step-down circuit, and stepped-down voltage output terminals of the step-down circuits are connected in common. The common connection of the stepped-down voltage output terminals of both step-down circuits makes possible parallel driving of both, selective driving of either or consecutive driving of the two. In the consecutive driving, even if the switched capacitor type step-down circuit is driven after driving the series regulator type step-down circuit first to supply a stepped-down voltage to loads, the switched capacitor type step-down circuit will need only to be compensated for a discharge due to the loads, and a peak of a charge current for capacitors can be kept low. When operation of the switched capacitor type step-down circuit is started, no large rush current arises, and occurrence of noise is restrained.

Controlled release vascular implants, such as vascular grafts, stents, wraps, and gels comprising a biocompatible polymer and all trans retinoic acid (ATRA), or its derivatives, can be used to treat, prevent, or inhibit thrombosis and / or neointimal hyperplasia which may otherwise be induced by prosthetic implantation. In particular, the implants herein can inhibit smooth muscle cell proliferation, neointimal hyperplasia, and upregulate antithrombotic genes and nitric oxide production in the vasculature. Further, the implants are capable of delivering controlled and predictable localized concentrations of ATRA.
