Sensor fusion for model-based detection in pipe and cable locator systems

Line locator systems that fuse traditional sensors used in a combined pipe and cable locator (electromagnetic coils, magnetometers, and ground penetrating radar antennas) with low cost inertial sensors (accelerometers, gyroscopes) in a model-based approach are presented. Such systems can utilize inexpensive MEMS sensors for inertial navigation. Position sensing with improved linearity

A position-sense interface with improved transfer characteristics. Electrical position detection circuitry, which may be substantially time-multiplexed or frequency-multiplexed, comprises a differential charge integrator with input-sensed output-driven common mode feedback. By placing sense capacitors in the feedback loop of said differential charge integrator with input-sensed output-driven common mode feedback, improved position sensing linearity is attained. In some embodiments of the invention, a compensating charge is applied to the sense capacitors in a fashion that minimizes the output common mode shift of the opamp. The magnitude of the compensating charge may be preset at a substantially constant level, or derived by a feedback loop that measures the shift in output common mode voltage in response to an excitation signal and adjusts the magnitude of the compensating charge to drive said shift towards zero. The invention has numerous advantages for acceleration measurement in both open-loop and force-balanced accelerometers, as well as rotation rate measurement in a vibratory rate gyroscope. Other applications in which the invention may prove advantageous include: motion detection for an oscillation-sustaining feedback loop; position detection of actuators, including micro-actuators used for effecting controlled motion of a disk-drive read / write head, or effecting controlled motion of an optically active device, such as a positionable mirror for use in fiber-optic data communications; and application of electrostatic forces for large motions.

Method for optimizing valve position and pump speed in a PID control valve system without the use of external signals

The present invention provides an algorithm that utilizes flow reference data which can be mathematically determined as a function of various pump and motor parameters such as speed, torque or power or from calibrated flow curves stored in an evaluation device, or from an external flow reference such as a flowmeter. Once the PID control valve has reached its steady state condition a calculated flow value is captured and compared to the current flow value obtained after the variable frequency drive has decreased in frequency (speed). The valve position is optimized just prior to the speed threshold where the flow condition of the algorithm is no longer true.

Practical Method for Upgrading Existing GNSS User Equipment with Tightly Integrated Nav-Com Capability

A practical method for adding significant new high-performance, tightly integrated Nav-Com capability to any Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) user equipment, such as GPS receivers, requires no hardware modifications to the existing user equipment. In one example, the iGPS concept is applied to a Defense Advanced GPS Receiver (DAGR) and combines Low Earth Orbiting (LEO) satellites, such as Iridium, with GPS or other GNSS systems to significantly improve the accuracy, integrity, and availability of Position, Navigation, and Timing (PNT)—in some cases by three orders of magnitude, to enable high precision GNSS carrier phase observable to be more readily exploited to improve PNT availability—even under interference conditions or occluded environments, and to enable new communication enhancements made available by the synthesis of precisely coupled navigation and communication modes. To achieve time synchronization stability to the required sub-20 ps level between the existing DAGR and a plug-in iGPS enhancement module, a special-purpose wideband reference signal is generated by the iGPS module and coupled to the DAGR via the existing antenna port, so that no hardware modification of the DAGR is required.

Method for fabricating a multi-density polymeric interbody spacer

A multi-density polymeric interbody spacer formed from biocompatible material for osteoconductivity includes multiple density regions of different porosity to provide both strength and osteoconductivity. An interface region is formed between the density regions to provide both direct adhesion and mechanical interlocking between the different density regions to increase the strength of the multi-density polymeric interbody spacer.
