A draw extending archery system enables a user to draw a draw string multiple times to store energy. Embodiments of the system include a transmission that operatively engages the draw string and a flexible limb. From an initial rest position, the user initiates a charging stroke on the draw string. During a first charging stroke, the transmission engages to store energy during the draw. At the end of the charging stroke, the transmission engages to prevent release of stored energy. The transmission also disengages the draw string to enable a subsequent charging stroke from an intermediate rest position. From a final rest position, the user initiates a firing stroke on the draw string. At the end of the firing stroke, the transmission couples the draw string and the flexible limb to release stored energy through the draw string.

Process for the formation of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes

Three processes for the manufacture of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) which utilize the action of bases that are capable of either attacking silicon or any compound that can react with a protic solvent (e.g. ROH, H2O etc.) and generate hydroxide [OH]−, alkoxide [RO]−, etc. The first process utilizes such bases to effectively redistribute the silicon-oxygen frameworks in polymeric silsesquioxanes [RSiO1.5]∞ where ∞=1−1,000,000 or higher into POSS nanostructures of formulas [(RSiO1.5)n]Σ#, homoleptic, [(RXSiO1.5)n]Σ#, functionalized homoleptic, [(RSiO1.5)m(R′SiO1.5)n]Σ#, heteroleptic, and {(RSiO1.5)m(RXSiO1.0)n}Σ#, functionalized heteroleptic nanostructures. The second process utilizes base to aid in the formation of POSS nanostructures of formulas [(RSiO1.5)n]Σ# homoleptic and [(RSiO1.5)m(R′SiO1.5)n]Σ# heteroleptic and [(RSiO1.5)m(RXSiO1.0)n]Σ# functionalized heteroleptic nanostructures from silanes RSiX3 and linear or cyclic silsesquioxanes of the formula RX2Si—(OSiRX)m—OSiRX2 where m=0-10, X═OH, Cl, Br, I, alkoxide OR, acetate OOCR, peroxide OOR, amine NR2, isocyanate NCO, and R. The third process utilizes base to selectively ring-open the silicon-oxygen-silicon (Si—O—Si) bonds in POSS structures to form POSS species with incompletely condensed nanostructures. These processes also afford stereochemical control over X. The three processes result in new POSS species that can undergo additional chemical manipulations to ultimately be converted into POSS-species suitable for polymerization, grafting, or other desirable chemical reactions.

Apparatus for treating venous insufficiency

A catheter delivers an electrode within a vein for a minimally invasive treatment of varicose veins and venous insufficiency using RF energy. The catheter is introduced into a patient and positioned within the section of the vein to be treated. The electrode radiates high frequency energy towards the vein, and the surrounding venous tissue becomes heated and begins to shrink. The catheter includes a controllable member for limiting the amount of shrinkage of the vein to the diameter of the member. The electrode remains active until there has been sufficient shrinkage of the vein. The extent of shrinkage of the vein may be detected by fluoroscopy. After treating one section of the vein, the catheter and the electrode can be repositioned intraluminally within the vein to treat different sections of the vein until all desired venous sections and valves are repaired and rendered functionally competent.

Method of tuning a bat and a tuned bat

A method of tuning a bat includes estimating a ball-bat interaction time, Ti, of an impact between a ball and the bat and tuning at least one desired mode of vibration in the bat produced by the impact. The desired mode of vibration is tuned by selecting properties of the bat so that the desired mode of vibration has a period approximately equal to 4 / 3Ti. When a mode of vibration is so tuned, the energy the vibration transfers to a batted ball is optimized. A tuned bat has one or more of the desired modes that is approximately equal to 4 / 3Ti, giving the bat a desirable bat performance factor and a desirable level of durability. Typically, the first hoop mode of vibration is given first priority during tuning of the bat. However, other modes of vibration, such as an axial bending mode of vibration may also be tuned.

Emitting Color Controllable Polymers for Organic Light Emitting Diode Display Based on Partially Conjugated PPV Copolymers

We disclose a new concept to realize emitter color control through the control of conjugation length of the partially conjugated poly(phenylenevinylene) (PCPPV) emitter using the conjugation limited atoms in their polymer backbone. Silicon, nitrogen, oxygen and sulfur are used as the conjugation limitation atoms. The emitting color of PCPPV depends on the conjugation length. For example, PCPPV with a short conjugation length can emit blue color. Increasing the conjugation length, the emitting color can change to longer spectral band such as green and red color. This new concept enables the color tuning for the realization of white light emitting polymer without any complicated fabrication process. The white light emitter can be realized via simple mixing of different color PCPPV emitters and can also be realized through random copolymerization of PCPPV with moderated monomer feeding ratios.
