Sheet Member for Improving Communication, and Antenna Device and Electronic Information Transmitting Apparatus Provided Therewith

In one embodiment of the present invention, a conductive pattern portion formed in a pattern layer functions as an antenna, and, when electromagnetic waves at a predetermined frequency arrive, resonance occurs, and an electromagnetic wave of a specific frequency is introduced into a sheet member. As to the sheet member having the pattern layer, even in a small and thin sheet member, the phase of reflected waves from the reflection area can be adjusted, and thus an area having high electric field intensity due to interference between reflected waves from the reflection area and arriving electromagnetic waves can be set in the vicinity of the antenna element. When the sheet member is disposed between an antenna element and a communication jamming member, an electromagnetic field is generated around the conductive pattern portion, and an electromagnetic energy is supplied from the conductive pattern portion to the antenna element, and therefore receiving power of the antenna element can be increased. Accordingly, wireless communication can be suitably performed.

Power conditioner for microbial fuel cells

A two-stage voltage step-up converter and energy storage system is utilized for harvesting trickling electrons from benthic microbe habitats. A relatively random low voltage from the microbial fuel cell (less than about 0.8 VDC) is provided to the first stage step-up converter, which stores power in a first output storage device. A first comparator circuit turns on the second stage step-up converter to transfer energy from the first output storage device to a second output storage device. A second comparator circuit intermittently connects the load to the second output storage device. After initial start-up, the system is self-powered utilizing the first and second output devices but may use a battery for the initial start-up, after which an automatic switch can switch the battery out of the circuit.

Encoded light-activated illumination

A method for controlling detached lighting units uses source light of a capable flashlight to communicate information. The capable flashlight encodes an ID Tag in modulated light, and the detached lighting units recognize the specific ID Tag and responds, for example by activating and creating illumination. A user can illuminate selected areas by shining the beam of the flashlight on detached lighting units to selectively activate them, and since the detached lighting units only respond to the encoded light, unintended activation is avoided. In addition to the encoded ID Tag, mode information can be included such that the detached lighting units can respond in a number of ways, such as selected periods of activation. Stored ID Tags can be transferred and thus shared using the same modulated light. ID Tags can be randomly re-assigned, and the new value shared among other flashlights and detached lighting units, creating a coordinated set.

Increasing the demand reduction effectiveness of an energy storage system

In various embodiments, a hedge mode plugin increases the ability of an energy storage system to reduce the demand charges associated with purchasing electricity from a utility. A utility measurement interval (UMI) is divided into a pre-discharge phase and a subsequent compensatory charge phase. During the pre-discharge phase, the hedge mode plugin causes an energy storage device to discharge. At the beginning of the compensatory charge phase, the hedge mode plugin computes time-indexed charge values based on the total amount of energy that the energy storage device discharged during the pre-discharge phase. The hedge mode plugin then causes the energy storage device to charge based on at least one of the charge values. By systematically pre-discharging and re-charging the energy device, the hedge mode plugin optimizes the demand reduction effectiveness of the energy storage system during each UMI while stabilizing the state-of-charge of the energy storage device across multiple UMIs.
