Localized production of microbubbles and control of cavitational and heating effects by use of enhanced ultrasound

The invention is a method of using ultrasound waves that are focused at a specific location in a medium to cause localized production of bubbles at that location and to control the production, and the cavitational and heating effects that take place there. According to the method of the invention, the production and control is accomplished by selecting the range of parameters of multiple transducers that are focused at the location such that they produce by interference specific waveforms at the focal point, which are not produced at other locations. Preferably the region within the focal zone of all the transducers in which the specific waveform develops at significant intensities, is typically very small. The invention is also a system for carrying out the method. The method and system of the invention can be used to perform a variety of therapeutic procedures. Typical of such procedures is occlusion of varicose veins.

Medical instrument working end and method for endoluminal treatments

A medical instrument that utilizes electrical energy delivery between first and second opposing polarity electrodes in an interior bore of a working end to cause vaporization of an inflowing fluid media. The vaporization and expansion of the fluid media creates pressure gradients in the working end that causes heated vapor to propagate distally from the working end. The propagation or jetting of the vapor media is used to controllably cause thermal effects in endoluminal environments. The instrument and method can be used to shrink and occlude blood vessels in a treatment for varicose veins.

Venous insufficiency treatment method

The method of treating varicose veins and other vascular diseases provides sclerosant fluid through a catheter into the body vessel to be treated. The catheter has a lumen and a plurality of sidewall exits. The sclerosant fluid is provided under sufficient pressure so that it comes out of each exit as a jet of fluid with sufficient velocity to impinge on the vessel wall substantially orthogonal to the wall and thus minimize dilution of the sclerosant fluid and optimize coverage. A movable sheath on the catheter permits selecting a portion of the exits to be uncovered and thus create an infusion zone for the jets of sclerosant fluid which approximately match a desired treatment zone.

Endoscopic arterial pumps for treatment of cardiac insufficiency and venous pumps for right-sided cardiac support

InactiveUS7144364B2Easily weanedEasy to removeStentsSurgeryRight-SidedLung
Methods for using blood pumps to treat heart failure are disclosed. The pump is mounted on an interior of a stent, and the stent is releasably mounted on a distal end of a catheter. The distal end of the catheter is inserted into a peripheral artery and advanced to position at a region of interest within the descending aorta, the ascending aorta, or the left ventricle. The stent and the pump are released from the catheter, and the pump is activated to increase blood flow downstream of the pump. The pump can also be positioned in the vena cava or used to treat right-sided heart failure following the insertion of an LVAD, or to improve venous return in patients with varicose veins. Non-stent pumps are described for insertion between the pulmonary vein and aorta, and between the vena cava and pulmonary artery designed for use during cardiac surgery.

Vascular occlusion systems and methods

A blood vessel occlusion system and method includes a handheld probe including a power source, the probe being adapted to transmit energy from the power source through a body surface and into a target blood vessel, for example a varicose vein. Further included is a manual or automatic switch mechanism adapted to enable and disable the power source in response to a predetermined level of compression applied, by means of the probe against the target blood vessel. When the blood vessel is compressed sufficiently to collapse and substantially slow or substantially prevent a flow of blood therethrough, the power source is activated and the vessel is cauterized, leaving the blood vessel in a condition that is resistant to recanalization.

Electro active elastic compression bandage

This invention relates to an elastic bandage for supporting a body extremity such as a leg. Such bandages are used to overcome problems with fluid retention and swelling in the legs, occurring as a consequence of varicose veins, vascular incompetence, pregnancy, etc. It is a task of this invention to supply an active support for a body extremity such as a leg, which can be used by a person underneath the clothes and will not reduce the mobility of the patient. This task is solved in that an elastic bandage comprises an elastic layer for surrounding a body extremity to exert compressive force on the extremity, the bandage being, at least partly, formed by elastomeric actuation elements, whereby electrical control of the compressive force is possible, and where the control is due to a signal from some sensing system.

Spider Vein Treatment Apparatus

A medical ultrasound apparatus and associated methods of use is disclosed enabling a relatively non-invasive or minimally invasive method to treat skin or tissue. The apparatus is constructed from an ultrasound tip mechanically coupled to a shaft. The shaft is mechanical coupled to an ultrasound transducer driven by an ultrasound generator. The ultrasound tip possesses at least one radial surface, a cavity, or some other form of a hollowed out area, within at least one of the radial surfaces, and a non-metallic sheath covering portions of the tip so that only the sheath and not the tip would normally contact the patient's skin. The disclosed method of treating spider, reticular or small varicose veins with the apparatus can be practiced by contacting the sheath with the patient's epidermal skin layers and delivering ultrasonic energy released from the various surfaces of the vibrating tip to the skin and / or tissue through direct contact and / or with a coupling fluid focused from a cavity.

Method and apparatus for avulsion of varicose veins

Apparatuses and methods for removing veins, usually varicose veins, rely on endoluminal capture of a distal end of the vein segment to be removed. In the illustrated embodiments, a shaft having reciprocatable penetrating elements is used to engage and capture the distal end of the vein. After rotating the shaft to pull the distal segment of the vein away from the connecting tissue, the shaft is withdrawn proximally, invaginating the segment back to the point of insertion.

Fixed-circumference medical support appliance

A medical support appliance custom made to fit the patient's limb exactly. Since the appliance fits exactly, it restricts the engorgement of varicose veins and swelling of the limb by retaining its exact shape and dimension, thereby resisting any outward expansion of the limb, and not by pressing in on the limb. The appliance employs an assembly of materials which resists the outward pressure exerted by the veins by retaining its circumference dimensions, and which at the same time stretches longitudinally for comfort and mobility. The assembly is a composite of latex, formed around a replica of the patient's limb, wrapped with non-stretch fiberglass thread, and finished with trim material and a zipper.

Described herein are a device and a method for the treatment of varicose veins via laser radiation, and in particular using a holmium laser. The radiation of a laser source (5) is injected in a fiber (3) that can be inserted in the vessel to be treated. The laser source emits a radiation such as to cause a hyalinizing sclerosis with structural modifications both to the fibers of the collagen (shrinkage) and to the extracellular matrix of the median coat of the vein by the photothermal effect, substantially without thermal stress of the morphological component of the tunica media and of the tunica intima.
