Packet Sampling Flow-Based Detection of Network Intrusions

InactiveUS20050210533A1Accurate and reliable methodEnhanced wide-area IDS solutionMemory loss protectionDigital data processing detailsTraffic volumeClient-side
A flow-based intrusion detection system for detecting intrusions in computer communication networks. Data packets representing communications between hosts in a computer-to-computer communication network are processed and assigned to various client / server flows. Statistics are collected for each flow. Then, the flow statistics are analyzed to determine if the flow appears to be legitimate traffic or possible suspicious activity. A concern index value is assigned to each flow that appears suspicious. By assigning a value to each flow that appears suspicious and adding that value to the total concern index of the responsible host, it is possible to identify hosts that are engaged in intrusion activity. When the concern index value of a host exceeds a preset alarm value, an alert is issued and appropriate action can be taken.

Instant messenger presence and identity management

The present invention provides a method and system for reliable and accurate presence / status management and identity detection in Instant Messaging (IM) applications by using video, still image, and / or audio information. In one embodiment, a device such as a camera captures still image, video, and / or audio data. Relevant information is then extracted from the captured data and analyzed. Known techniques such as face recognition, face tracking, and motion detection, can be sued for extracting and analyzing data. This information is then interpreted for the IM application, and provided to an Application Programs Interface (API) for the IM application. The API can use the information for various purposes, including updating the status of the user (e.g., available, busy, on the phone, away from desk, etc.) and updating the identity of the user.

In-flight detection of wing flap free wheeling skew

A method for detecting freewheeling skew failures in the wing flaps of an aircraft includes measuring the outputs of flap skew sensors when the aircraft is in flight (IF) and the flaps are extended to a selected position, and when the aircraft is next on the ground (OG) and the flaps are extended to the selected position. The respective differences between the IF and OG outputs of symmetrical pairs of the flap skew sensors are computed, and then the respective difference between the computed IF output difference and the computed OG output difference of each symmetrical pair of the sensors is computed. The computed IF and OG difference of each symmetrical pair of the sensors is then compared with each of predetermined maximum and minimum threshold value to determine whether a freewheeling skew failure exists in any of the flaps of the aircraft.

A compact scanning apparatus has an infrared laser adapted to emit light. The light is delivered as a beam by an optical system to illuminate an interrogation area on the surface of an object being scanned. Such illumination has sufficient intensity and duration to cause selective desorption of molecules of the contraband substance, which are present on the surface, without substantially damaging the surface. A collection system collects at least a portion of the desorbed molecules. At least a portion of the collected molecules is thermally decomposed to form NO2 and transferred to a reaction cell containing an aqueous, alkaline, luminol-containing solution. The NO2 reacts with the luminol to produce light by chemiluminescence. A light detector registers the presence of this light as indicative of the detection of the contraband substance, and activates a signaling device to provide an audible or visible alarm. The apparatus rapidly detects the presence of a wide variety of contraband substances in an accurate, reliable manner. It provides for automated screening, with the result that vagaries of human performance are virtually eliminated. False alarms are reduced and detection efficacy is increased. A traceable residue of the detected contraband is left on the article for use in forensic analysis.

The apparatus further includes a supplemental detector such as a GC / IMS detector that is activated in response to the detection of the chemiluminescent light. The supplemental detector provides confirmation of the detection of contraband substance and activates a signaling device to provide an audible or visible alarm. The rapid pre-screening permits the apparatus to identify suspicious items, while the supplemental detection system can be optimized for more intense, but time-consuming scrutiny of just the suspicious items. Both effective detection and high throughput are thereby achieved in an accurate, reliable manner.

Echo detector having correlator with preprocessing

An echo detector correlates between an incoming signal an echo signal to determine echo delay. A preprocesssor extracts a characteristic pattern such as a binary pattern derived by thresholding an averaged power of each signal. This pattern is down sampled then used for the correlation, and delay is deduced from peaks in the correlation. Advantages include reduced computational load, or larger correlation window size, because the characteristic pattern is easier to correlate. The quantising can enhance the correlation peaks, and the averaging can limit the number of transitions, to give more robustness to noise. An echo canceller has a coarse echo delay estimator and a fine echo delay estimator. The coarse estimated delay is used to adjust a delay detection range of a fine delay detector having a narrow range. The output of the fine detector is used to adjust or suppress the adaptive echo canceller.
