This enables processing of the measured data indicative of the detected electromagnetic radiation response to determine at least one parameter of the subject in a region corresponding to the locations in the medium at which the electromagnetic radiation has been tagged by the acoustic radiation, and outputting data indicative of the at least one determined parameter.

The energy transfer may be repeaters. Quarter-wave transformers can be provided at one or more points on the periodic structure with the imaginary portion approximately equaling zero to transmit waves across one or more discontinuities. A terminator can be employed for cancellation of waves. The invention substantially eliminates reflections of the wave energy at the prime frequency by joints between sections of the periodic structure.

Electromagnetic piezoelectric acoustic sensor

The invention relates to an electromagnetic piezoelectric acoustic sensor (EMPAS). The sensor comprises a piezoelectric sensor plate spaced apart from an induced dynamic electromagnetic field, such as from an electromagnetic coil through which AC current flows. The electromagnetic field induces vibration in the sensor plate by fluctuating the aligned dipole moments of the piezoelectric material. Changes on the surface of the sensor plate can be detected by variation in resonance frequency of the sensor plate. The invention represents an improvement over conventional sensor methodologies in that no metallization of the sensor surface is required, and no permanent magnet is needed. The sensor may be used to detect absorption of molecules or biomolecular interactions between probe and target molecules.

In generating a noise pulse, the flash-bang projectile provides a housing that includes a gas chamber that entraps air. The gas chamber includes a compression device that, when the flash-bang projectile is shot or otherwise ejected by a gun or other form of ejection device, compresses the air that is entrapped in the gas chamber. A burst disk forms one wall of the gas chamber and is configured to rupture a selected time delay after the air has been compressed. Rupturing of the burst disk releases the compressed air entrapped in the gas chamber, allowing the air to be released through a horn nozzle, thereby generating a noise pulse. The flash-bang projectile may have more than one gas chambers, with associated compression devices, whose burst disks are configured to rupture with diverse time delays, in which case the flash-bang projectile can generate multiple noise pulses with corresponding delays. In generating a light flash, the flash-bang projectile includes one or more light generating devices, which may include items such as flash lamps, light-emitting devices, and the like, along with a control module for powering the light generating devices. The control module includes an electrical generating arrangement that uses a portion of the kinetic energy imparted to the flash-bang projectile when it is ejected to generate electrical energy. The electrical energy is, in turn, used to power the light generating devices. Electrical traces on the burst disks are broken when the burst disks rupture to facilitate synchronization of the light flashes with the noise pulses.

Determination of downhole pressure while pumping

Tubewaves are used to transmit an indication of the depth at which a condition is detected in a well. In particular, the depth is calculated based on the difference in arrival time at the surface of a first tubewave which propagates directly upward in the borehole and a second tubewave which initially travels downward and is then reflected upward. The tubewaves may be generated by a canister designed to implode at a certain pressure. After being introduced into the flowline at an above ground inlet, the canister is carried downhole by gravity and the fluid being pumped. When the canister reaches a depth at which its pressure tolerance is exceeded, it implodes and generates the tubewaves. An analyzer at the surface detects the tubewaves with a hydrophone array and generates a pressure versus depth profile of the well, i.e., one data point for each implosion. Canisters may be acoustically tagged by controlling volume and orifice size in order to generate tubewaves having particular frequency and amplitude characteristics. Canisters may also be configured to produce multiple implosions, e.g., one implosion at each of a selection of different pressures. Canisters may also be equipped with triggering and arming mechanisms, and may generate tubewaves in response to conditions other than a particular pressure.

The invention relates to a method for gasifying solid fuel in a co-current gasifier having a fuel silo (14) and a combustion chamber (32). The method comprises a pyrolysis phase in which the fuel decomposes into pyrolysis products, and a gasification phase in which the pyrolysis products are gasified into product gas. Heat transfer from the combustion chamber (32) to the fuel silo (14) is restricted in the method. This is to ensure that the fuel does not dry and pyrolysis does not take place in the fuel silo. The beginning of the pyrolysis is intentionally transferred as close to the gasification phase as possible, and an attempt is made to make the duration of the pyrolysis phase as short as possible. The rise of the fuel temperature is slowed down by transferring heat generated in the gasification phase to a medium, such as gasification air. In the co-current gasifier according to the invention, between the fuel silo and the combustion chamber, there is a cooling channel (18), which restricts the transfer of heat and also functions as a preheater for the gasification air. The gasifier has an upper floor (16a), which forms the upper surface of the cooling channel, and a lower floor (16b) forming the lower surface of the cooling channel, and the fuel silo is placed above the upper floor and the combustion chamber below the lower floor. The combustion chamber of the gasifier comprises an internal jacket (34), an intermediate jacket (36), an external jacket (38) and a grate (40). The gasification air is arranged to be conducted to the combustion chamber through a space between the intermediate jacket and the external jacket.
