Lancing device

A lancing device is adapted for use in firing a lancet into the skin of a patient to acquire a blood sample and, subsequent thereto, calculating and displaying the concentration of glucose in the acquired sample. In one embodiment, the device comprises a lancet and a torsion spring coupled to the lancet through a lancet holder. The torsion spring includes inner, middle and outer rings which are concentrically configured, a plurality of activation spring arms which connect the middle and outer rings and a plurality of return spring arms which connect the inner and middle rings. In use, the plurality of activation and return spring arms can be independently transformed between energized and de-energized states using a single, button-shaped mechanism. Rotation of the mechanism is used to energize the activation and return spring arms. With the return spring arms maintained in their energized state, depression of the mechanism transforms the activation spring arms from their energized state to their de-energized state which drives the lancet from a retracted position to an extended position. Once the activation spring arms reach their de-energized state, the return spring arms transform from their energized state to their de-energized state which pulls the lancet back from its extended position to its retracted position.

Disposable, closed blood sampling system for use in medical conduit line

A disposable, closed fluid sampling system for use with a medical conduit line, especially for taking blood samples from a pressure monitoring line. The conduit line has at least one fluid sampling site interposed between a distal segment of tubing and a proximal segment of tubing. The system includes a disposable subsystem having a bypass cannula adapted to engage the sampling site, a reservoir for drawing a prime volume of fluid past the sampling site, and a fluid sampling container. A 3-way stopcock may connect the reservoir, bypass cannula, and sampling vessel for controlling the sampling procedure. The bypass cannula may simultaneously place the subsystem into fluid communication with an inner chamber of the sampling site and exclude the proximal segment of the conduit line. Alternatively, a stopcock immediately adjacent the sampling site in the proximal segment may be utilized. A method of using the system includes attaching the disposable subsystem, opening the reservoir to the distal segment while excluding the proximal segment, drawing a prime volume of fluid into the reservoir, opening the sampling vessel to the distal segment and drawing a sample, re-infusing the prime volume into the distal segment, and removing and discarding the subsystem. The reservoir remains attached between the prime volume draw and re-infusion and is thus “closed.”

Novel devices which can be used to both collect blood samples from and administer medical fluids to a patient on a repeated and continual basis using one rather than multiple needle insertions. The devices are capable of removing blood from one of the patient's veins using the intrinsic venous pressure of the blood and capillary action of the device, thereby preventing vacuum-induced collapse of the vein. The device typically includes a main tubing segment confluently connected to a cannula for insertion in the patient's vein. A syringe port and a volumeter for collecting blood branch separately from the main tubing segment. The device is used to collect blood by attaching an empty blood collection syringe to the syringe port, inserting the cannula in the patient's vein, allowing passive flow of blood from the main tubing segment into the volumeter under intrinsic venous blood pressure and capillary action, and then facilitating active flow of blood from the volumeter into the blood collection syringe by extending the syringe plunger. The blood-filled syringe may be replaced by additional empty blood collection syringes and the procedure repeated, as needed, depending on the quantity of blood to be obtained. The device may be used to administer medical fluids to the patient by first removing the residual blood from the main tubing segment and volumeter, flushing the main tubing segment with sterile normal saline and administering the fluids to the patient through the main tubing segment from a medical fluid syringe or catheter attached to the syringe port.

The conduit line (70) has at least one fluid sampling site (100, 102) interposed between a distal segment of tubing and a proximal segment of tubing. The system includes a disposable subsystem (96) having a bypass cannula (110) adapted to engage the sampling site, a reservoir (112) for drawing a prime volume of fluid past the sampling site, and a fluid sampling container (114).
