Biocompatible polymer compositions for dual or multi staged curing

The present invention provides a biocompatible polymer composition for use in biomedical applications comprising a base molecule, a linker molecule and at least one initiator compound, said base molecule having at least two differing functionalities, and said linker molecule having a functionality reactive with at least one functionality of said base molecule, the first of said at least two functionalities of said base molecule enabling a first curing stage of said polymer composition by reaction with said linker molecule, and the second and any further functionality of said base molecule enabling second and further curing stages of said polymer composition, said first, second and any further curing stages being capable of activation simultaneously or independently of each other as required. The invention further provides uses of the polymer compositions of the invention in biomedical applications such as tissue engineering, dry delivery, as a bioadhesive in wound healing, as bone substitutes or scaffolds, as cements in dental and periodontal applications and as anti-adhesives or protective barriers.

Oxidation barrier coatings for silicon based ceramics

A protective barrier coating system including a diffusion barrier coating and an oxidation barrier coating and method for use in protecting silicon-based ceramic turbine engine components. A complete barrier coating system includes a thermal barrier coating of stabilized zirconia and an environmental barrier coating of an alloyed tantalum oxide. The oxidation barrier coating includes a layer of metallic silicates formed on a substrate of silicon nitride or silicon carbide to be protected. The oxidation barrier coating can include silicates of scandium, ytterbia or yttrium. The oxidation barrier coating may also include an inner layer of Si2ON2 between the diffusion barrier and the metallic silicate layer. The oxidation barrier coating can be applied to the substrate by spraying, slurry dipping and sintering, by a sol-gel process followed by sintering, by plasma spray, or by electron beam-physical vapor deposition. The diffusion layer of essentially pure Si3N4 can be applied to the substrate to prevent the migration of damaging cations from the protective layers to the substrate and is preferably formed by chemical vapor deposition. A method for protecting silicon based substrates can comprise a step of forming an oxidation barrier coating on a substrate, where a step of forming the oxidation barrier includes a step of sintering the oxidation barrier and substrate in a wet gas containing hydrogen.

Sterile polymerized covering dressing for wound surface

The invention provides a sterile polymerized covering for a wound surface-medical wet dressing for a burn wound, a preparation method of the dressing, and application. The dressing comprises the following components: 10 to 30g of chitosan, 30 to 80g of polyving akohol, 5 to 10g of alginate, 5 to 15g of isomaltose hypgather, 2 to 6g of carbomer 940, 2 to 5g of gelatin, 5 to 10g of sodium carboxymethylcellulose, 10 to 30g of glycerol, and 0.01 to 0.2g of menthol; 15 to 60g of condensed tannin which is remarkable in treatment can be selectively added; and a skin penetration enhancer or an appearance conditioning agent also can be selectively added. The dressing can be prepared into an irregular dressing in order to be suitable for the wound surfaces in irregular and special positions and also can be prepared into a solid plate-shaped dressing which can be shorn at random. According to the sterile polymerized covering dressing for the wound surface, the freezing and thawing technology and the irradiating technology are combined and cross-linked to realize the preparation, and the defects of the prior art can be overcome. The dressing is high in biocompatibility, free from toxicity and sensitization and high in mechanical strength and comfort level, is out of adhering during the process of being replaced after being attached for a long time, and is a nonantigenic protective barrier which has the effect of resisting and inhibiting bacteria.

Encapsulation of oxidatively unstable compounds

An encapsulated material containing an oxidation-sensitive core is covered by at least a dried phospholipid layer, and contains at least one phytosterol in the core, the phospholipid layer or in a further layer or layers. By using microencapsulation, oxidatively unstable materials may be provided with a synthetic protective barrier and rendered less susceptible to oxidative degradation.

A collapsible safety rail system for providing a portable or permanent protective barrier to provide for fall prevention from elevated or other work areas. Lockable pivot assemblies are located between heavy bases and the end posts of collapsible safety rail assemblies. Removable detent pins are utilized to lock the pivot assemblies to maintain the erected position of the collapsible safety rail assemblies in protective vertical orientation or are removed to allow maneuvering of the collapsible safety rail assemblies to a minimum viewable profile position when not required for personnel protection.
