Molecular-wire crossbar interconnect (MWCI) for signal routing and communications

A molecular-wire crossbar interconnect for signal routing and communications between a first level and a second level in a molecular-wire crossbar is provided. The molecular wire crossbar comprises a two-dimensional array of a plurality of nanometer-scale switches. Each switch is reconfigurable and self-assembling and comprises a pair of crossed wires which form a junction where one wire crosses another and at least one connector species connecting the pair of crossed wires in the junction. The connector species comprises a bi-stable molecule. Each level comprises at least one group of switches and each group of switches comprises at least one switch, with each group in the first level connected to all other groups in the second level in an all-to-all configuration to provide a scalable, defect-tolerant, fat-tree networking scheme. The primary advantage is ease of fabrication, because an active switch is formed any time two wires cross. This saves tremendously on circuit area (a factor of a few times ten), since no other wires or ancillary devices are needed to operate the switch or store the required configuration. This reduction of the area of a configuration bit and its switch to just the area of two crossing wires is a major advantage in constructing a defect-tolerant interconnect network.

Spherical Display and Control Device

A spherical display and control device, that is preferably collapsible between a spherical configuration and a collapsed generally cylindrical ellipsoid configuration, comprising a flexible transparent spherical surface sprung attached to a central hinged modular cube assembly that contains digital displays on outward faces, and circuitry, battery units and electronic modules on inward surfaces, where said sphere surface contains surface position sensing layers and said central cube contains gyroscopic and inertial sensing devices to provide spherical rotation, and physical displacement data for three dimensional control applications, where said displays preferably have curved polarizer lenses such that the overall device appears as a spherical display or are flat to form an overall Cuboid display or are combined with a flexible spherical display surfaces. The overall device being mechanically biased such that it is Bi-stable between the spherical and collapsed configuration via the action of pulling open and rotating the central cube halves.

A bi-stable snap action ribbon spring incorporated into self-latching, spring-loaded mechanisms. The dual mode stability of the spring eliminates the need for complex latching mechanisms thereby simplifying the device manufacture and device reliability. The spring is stable in either a linear or coiled state enabling the simplified design of rolling, hinging and feeding mechanisms. A plan or map rolling and presentation device incorporates a bi-stable snap action ribbon spring along with optional spring end caps and stiffening elements. The plan or map is driven to a stable coiled or stable rolled shape by the influence of the snap action spring. Application of the snap spring properties to a discreet length of a longer ribbon can create a hybrid bi-stable hinge mechanism. A convenient storage container utilizes the bi-stable characteristics of a snap action ribbon spring to create a container having a self-closing and captured lid. A can or drum feeder incorporates the bi-stable characteristics of a snap action ribbon spring to provide a device that reliably stores and presents cans such as soda cans.

The present invention relates to a material with a substrate and a plurality of compressible projections connected to the substrate. The projections may be formed in a thermoplastic substrate to have a variety of shapes, including a shape that defines a base portion and a spring portion. The spring portion may have a structure of a belleville spring that exhibits a non-linear and bi-stable response to compressive forces. The material may be incorporated into an upper for an article of footwear, thereby providing the footwear with enhanced fit and comfort characteristics.

High switching speed digital faraday rotator device and optical switches containing the same

In all-optical networks, high speed optical switching and routing becomes one of the most important issues for interconnecting the transport network layers. This invention describes novel polarization-independent high speed optical switches using a digital Faraday rotator, which can also be used for various other optical switching devices. The basic digital Faraday rotator device is composed of (a) a semi-hard or hard iron garnet based magneto-optic crystal having bi-stable magnetization states at zero external magnetic field. (b) a wire winding around the crystal for changing the magnetization states by pulsed current having both fast rise time and short duration. (c) a circuit generating the required current pulses with both polarities. After a driving current pulse excitation to set the magnetization direction, the high coercive force and high remnant squareness in the garnet-based crystal will maintain the saturation magnetization state in the crystal without the need of any external current or magnetic field to sustain the remnant state. The apparatus and the method disclosed in this invention effectively reduces the overall power consumption. By using this digital Faraday rotator device, the polarization independent 1x2 and 2x2 optical switches are designed and fabricated.
