Oxidative desulfurization and denitrogenation of petroleum oils

An improved oxidative process that employ a robust, non-aqueous, and oil-soluble organic peroxide oxidant for effective desulfurization and denitrogenation of hydrocarbons including petroleum fuels, hydrotreated vacuum gas oil (VGO), non-hydrotreated VGO, petroleum crude oil, synthetic crude oil from oil sand, and residual oil. Even at low concentrations and without the assistance of catalysts, the non-aqueous organic peroxide oxidant is extremely active and fast in oxidizing the sulfur and nitrogen compounds in the hydrocarbon feedstocks. Furthermore, the process generates a valuable organic acid by-product that is also used internally as the extractive solvent for effective removal of the oxidized sulfur and nitrogen from the hydrocarbons without the need of a final adsorption step. Novel process steps are also disclosed to substantially prevent yield loss in the oxidative process.

Oxidative desulfurization and denitrogenation of petroleum oils

A robust, non-aqueous, and oil-soluble organic peroxide oxidant is employed for oxidative desulfurization and denitrogenation of hydrocarbon feedstocks including petroleum fuels. Even at low concentrations, the non-aqueous organic peroxide oxidant is extremely active and fast in oxidizing the sulfur and nitrogen compounds in the hydrocarbon feedstocks without catalyst. Consequently, the oxidation reactions that employ the non-aqueous organic peroxide oxidant take place at substantially lower temperatures and shorter residence times than reactions in other oxidative desulfurization and denitrogenation processes. As a result, a higher percentage of the valuable non-sulfur and non-nitrogen containing components in the hydrocarbon feedstock are more likely preserved with the inventive process. Desulfurization and denitrogenation occur in a single phase non-aqueous environment so that no phase transfer of the oxidant is required.

Charged water fumigation for combustion systems

Internal combustion engines generally suffer from inadequate time to completely combust all the fuel in a given cycle. Therefore, any method for increasing the rate and completion of combustion is welcomed. A large excess of electrons are admitted to the combustion zone attached to a fine water droplet spray. The charged spray enters through the air intake valves at the beginning of the intake stroke. The charged spray becomes well mixed with the charge of air prior to fuel injection and the well mixed electrons provide for catalytic action. Electron catalyzed combustion reactions occur faster and at lower temperatures. The lower temperature reduces NOx and the faster burning increases efficiency and reduces soot formation. The catalytic benefits of charged water fumigation is only observed once the electron concentration exceeds a threshold value.

Methods are described for depositing a film or discontinuous layer of discrete clusters, of material (e.g., metals, metal mixtures or alloys, metal oxides, or semiconductors) on the surface of a substrate, e.g., a patterned silicon wafer, by i) dissolving a precursor of the material into a supercritical or near-supercritical solvent to form a supercritical or near-supercritical solution; ii) exposing the substrate to the solution, under conditions at which the precursor is stable in the solution; and iii) mixing a reaction reagent into the solution under conditions that initiate a chemical reaction involving the precursor, thereby depositing the material onto the solid substrate, while maintaining supercritical or near-supercritical conditions. The invention also includes similar methods for depositing material particles into porous solids, and films of materials on substrates or porous solids having material particles deposited in them. The invention also covers methods of preparing a plated substrate by depositing a catalytic layer followed by a plating layer.
