The invention discloses a method for determining background values of heavy metal elements in lake or reservoir sediments, relates to the field of ecological risk evaluation, and aims at solving the problem that the heavy metal elements in lake or reservoir sediments are high in background value difficulty, high in cost and incorrect in measured background values. The method comprises the following steps: determining the boundary ranges of lake or reservoir drainage basins; dividing the lake or reservoir drainage basins into sub-drainage basins and determining outlets of the sub-drainage basins; collecting superficial sediments at the outlets of the open areas and heavy metal pollution source-free sub-drainage basins of the lakes or reservoirs as sampling samples; detecting the contents of heavy metal elements in the pre-processed samples to obtain original data; and carrying out regression analysis on the original data, selecting the data in confidence intervals as background value calculation data, and obtaining the background values of the heavy metal elements in the lake or reservoir sediments according to the distribution rule of the background value calculation data. The method provided by the invention is simple, convenient and low in cost; and the obtained background values of the heavy metal elements in the sediments are correct and scientific.
