Device and method for tissue retraction in spinal surgery

InactiveUS20090076516A1Maintaining soft tissue retractionLess manipulationProsthesisBone platesSpinal columnIntervertebral space
The invention relates to a system and methods for retracting soft tissue during spinal repair or reconstruction procedures, particularly procedures within intervertebral sites of degenerated discs and associated neural compression. A retractor system includes an implantable bone plate, two or more retractor blades, the bone plate and retractor blades being mutually engageable; and a mechanism to adjust the retractor blade relative to the bone plate. In some embodiments, the retractor system may be applied to span more than one intervertebral space. An implanted retractor system provides an aperture for a clear operating field, and protects collateral tissue. A method for retracting soft tissue to facilitate spinal surgery includes securing a bone plate to adjacent vertebral bodies, engaging one or more retractor blades to the bone plate; and adjusting the angular position of the retractor blade relative to the bone plate so as to retract tissue lying external to the bone plate.

Methods and systems for measuring mechanical property of a vascular wall and method and system for determining health of a vascular structure

Methods and systems for measuring mechanical property of a vascular wall and a method and system for determining health of a vascular structure are provided wherein local deformation of a vessel wall resulting from physiologic pressures with altered transmural forces is measured. A non-invasive free-hand ultrasound scanning-procedure was performed to apply external force, comparable to the force generated in measuring a subject's blood pressure, to achieve higher strains by equalizing the internal arterial baseline pressure. When the applied pressure matched the internal baseline diastolic pressure, strain and strain rate increased by a factor of 10 over a cardiac cycle. Radial arterial strain was assessed in the vessel wall over the entire deformation procedure using a phase-sensitive, two-dimensional speckle-tracking algorithm. An elastic modulus reconstruction procedure was developed to estimate the non-linear elastic properties of the vascular wall.

Generalized MRI reconstruction with correction for multiple image distortion

Disclosed is an effective algorithm to correct motion-induced phase error using an iterative reconstruction. Using a conjugate-gradient (CG) algorithm, the phase error is treated as an image encoding function. Given the complex perturbation terms, diffusion-weighted images can be reconstructed using an augmented sensitivity map. The mathematical formulation and image reconstruction procedures are similar to the SENSE reconstruction. By defining a dynamic composition sensitivity, the CG phase correction method can be conveniently incorporated with SENSE reconstruction for the application of multi-shot SENSE DWI. Effective phase correction and multi-shot SENSE DWI (R=1 to 3) are demonstrated on both simulated and in vivo data acquired with PROPELLER and SNAILS.

Method and System for Random Steerable Sar Using Compressive Sensing

A synthetic aperture radar image is generated by directing randomly a beam of transmitted pulses at an area using a steerable array of antennas, wherein the area is uniformly by the transmitted pulses while the array of antennas moves along a path. A sparse reconstruction procedure is applied to received signals from the area due to reflecting the transmitted pulses to generate the image corresponding to the area. The radar system can operate in either sliding spotlight mode, or scan mode. The area can be of an arbitrary shape, and a resolution of the image can be increased.

Method for rebuilding data of magnetic disk array

The invention relates to a disk array data reconstruction method which pertains to a computer data storage method and solves the problem that the existing disk array data reconstruction method takes too much time and affects the reading and writing performances and reliability of a storage system. A disk array of the invention is provided with a main control module, reading and writing processing modules and a reconstruction module and comprises the steps of initialization, diary pot diagram update, reconstruction based on diaries and finishing. The method instructs data reconstruction process by the real-time monitoring of disk space using status of the disk array; when space that is not accessed is reconstructed, the only requirement is to write 0 in all corresponding data blocks newly added into a disk, thus greatly reducing physical disk visiting time brought by reconstruction, increasing reconstruction speed and reducing the response time of user access; the reconstruction method does not change the reconstruction procedure or the distribution manner of disk array data, can conveniently optimize various traditional disk array data reconstruction methods and is applicable to the construction of storage systems with high performance, high usability and high reliability.

Measurement of tissue elastic modulus

An optimized elastic modulus reconstruction procedure can estimate the nonlinear elastic properties of vascular wall from intramural strain and pulse wave velocity (PWV) measurements. A noninvasive free-hand ultrasound scanning procedure is used to apply external force, comparable to the force in measuring a subject's blood pressure, to achieve higher strains by equalizing the internal arterial baseline pressure. PWV is estimated at the same location where intramural strain is measured. The reconstructed elastic modulus is optimized and the arterial elastic modulus can be determined and monitored using a simple dual elastic modulus reconstruction procedure.
