A method for clustering together network clients for guiding of placement of network servers is disclosed. A number of routing table prefix/netmask entries are aggregated and unified into a tubular format. The routing table entries may be converted into a singular format. A network server log is used to extract a number of client IP addresses which are compared to the entries within the unified routing table. A common prefix shared by a number of the client IP addresses and an entry in the unified routing table is determined and used to cluster the clients together in a client cluster. Network servers, such as proxy server, cache servers, content distribution servers and mirror server may be placed in the network according to the client clusters.

A method for delivering applications over a network where the application's logic runs on the backend server and the application's user interface is rendered on a client-device, according to its display capabilities, thought a network connection with the backend server. Embodiments of the present invention provide techniques for managing content updates for web-based applications. In one set of embodiments, a configurable proxy cache is provided that executes rule-based content updates of web content on the behalf of an application (e.g., web browser) while the application is not running. This allows for better management of intermittent connection quality, memory/power savings for mobile devices, and caching of information that can be shared with the application and other network-aware applications/services. Methods and systems for providing voice over IP traffic engineering and path resilience using a network-aware media gateway are provided. In a media gateway, voice over IP hosts are assigned a first set of IP addresses. Network interfaces in the media gateway are assigned a second set of IP addresses that differ from the first set of IP addresses. Per-interface routers advertise reachability information from at least one of the voice over IP hosts via multiple interfaces and participate in network routing protocols to generate per interface routing tables. Voice over IP path lists may be generated based on the per interface routing tables. Internal costs may be assigned to the associations between the voice over IP hosts and the interfaces based on traffic engineering criteria.

An enhanced radio link protocol (RLP) in a wireless access network that is network aware is disclosed. The RLP increases radio link quality by various ARQ mechanisms. The RLP framing structure is included that supports and enables at least network layer packet boundary detection, dynamic and adaptive ARO schemes for QoS support on a per-packet basis, and a flexible RLP frame structure for fast adaptation to physical layer channel rate/RLP frame sizes. Optional uses include supporting negative acknowledgment (NAK) based ARQ.

Apparatus and methods managing the power profile of a network of interconnected devices. In one embodiment, an apparatus is provided for managing the power consumed by a network of devices. The apparatus includes power management logic that is disposed within a plurality of the devices in the network. The power management logic provides for network-aware power management of the network of devices. The power management logic has descriptor data and management data. The descriptor data identifies a power source for a corresponding device in the network. The management data identifies a function for remote execution by one or more other devices in the network.

A virtual machine running on an endpoint device may encode a mark comprising routing parameters within one or more packets of a packet stream to indicate services and/or costs to be utilized in processing and/or communicating the packet stream. The virtual machine may communicate the packet stream to another network device. The present invention is a method for improving delivery of content to a client communicating with a server on the Web. Groups or clusters of clients are formed by processing the IP addresses of the clients according to a network-aware, radix-encoded trie classification process. The groups of clients are categorized based on information about one or more clients in each group that can be determined by the server. That information is used to help drive tailored actions on the part of Web servers. Users with poor connectivity may choose not to spend much time at a Web site if it takes a long time to receive a page, even if the Web server at the site is not the bottleneck. Retaining such clients may be of interest to a Web site. Better-connected clients may be able to receive enhanced representations of Web pages such as with higher quality images.

A network (e.g., LAN/WLAN) contains individual private networks, each with an access point assistant (APA) containing an access point, web server, and other components, such as support voice interaction therewith. SIP (session initiation protocol) requests are processed by a networked server having a processor which has a dedicated packet handling circuit (or network-aware co-processor), without passing said requests through an IP stack to an application layer. The co-processor receives SIP requests in the form of IP packets. The co-processor then parses the packets, and thereby identifies a SIP destination address in the datagram of the packet. An apparatus and a method for providing an adaptive multimedia service in a mobile communication system are provided. The method of providing a multimedia service includes collecting user-preference-aware information, device-capability-aware information, and network-aware information, generating a packet according to a correlation among the user-preference-aware information, the device-capability-aware information, and the network-aware information, and providing a multimedia service according to the generated packet.

The invention provides a method and device for automatically selecting a network for a mobile terminal, which are used for network selection switching of the mobile terminal between a first network and a second network. The mobile terminal resides in the first network; and the method comprises the following steps of: A, acquiring a locus function for operation of the mobile terminal according to position information of the mobile terminal; B, calculating a network selection switching function of the mobile terminal according to the locus function for the operation of the mobile terminal; C, establishing a network switching region of the mobile terminal according to the network selection switching function and regions covered by the first network and the second network; and D, performing network selection switching in a corresponding network switching mode according to the network switching region where the mobile terminal is positioned and/or the signal intensity of the second network. The method and device for automatically selecting the network for the mobile terminal can switch the mobile terminal rapidly to a home network, and improves the network aware effect of a user.
