Metering in packet-based telephony networks

ActiveUS20050135578A1Easy to carryFacilitates efficient meteringTelephonic communicationTelephone networkPulse counting
One embodiment of the present invention facilitates efficient metering in a packet network environment by providing a single metering message, which contains sufficient information to provide the complete call tariff model for a particular call. The media gateway receiving the message can analyze the information provided in the message to determine how to provide metering pulses for all phases of the call, as well as any one-time charges, such as setup and add-on charges. Another embodiment of the invention provides a way for handling fractional pulse counts in an efficient manner. Yet another embodiment facilitates the handling of situations where charge intervals do not divide evenly into the phase duration of the phase associated with the call. In still another embodiment, the amount of information necessary to deliver the parameters of the call tariff model is minimized to reduce the overhead necessary for facilitating the metering process.

Network address translator and secure transfer device for interfacing networks

An interface for a private IP network interfaces flows of packets between gateway controllers and external media gateways. It has a network address translator and an IPsec device for maintaining secure paths to the external devices. A path identifier records which of the packet flows corresponds to which path. It is incorporated in the packet header, and means that the same interface can be used to couple many different external gateways, and interface them with many of the gateway controllers. Widespread deployment of such interfaces in anonymisers to achieve hiding of device addresses and network topology, as well as the reduction in use of expensive registered addresses is facilitated. By sending the path identifier in the packet, the IPsec device and the address translator can be loosely coupled devices, so standard readily available devices can be used.

Media gateway and server

A media gateway / media server (MGMS) distributes video, without impairment, from a variety of sources, over an in-home distribution medium (such as coaxial cable) directly to one or more conventional televisions sets within a house, i.e., without requiring specially adapted hardware, such as a set-top-box, at each television set. One or more peripheral control devices can be used to control the MGMS and select video content to be displayed on the various television sets. The MGMS produces a signal, such as an ATSC, DVB or QAM signal, that the television sets can receive directly, i.e., without additional hardware. In some embodiments, each television set has an associated dedicated channel on the in-home distribution medium, and the MGMS sends video content to a particular television set by modulating the video content onto the channel dedicated to that television set.

Methods and systems for per-session network address translation (NAT) learning and firewall filtering in media gateway

Methods and systems for per-session NAT learning and firewall filtering are disclosed. Media packets associated with a call / session are received and processed at a media gateway. For the first few received media packets associated with a session, the media gateway uses various unique methods to learn the actual source IP address and UDP port assigned to the remote communication terminal by its customer-premises Network Address Translators (NATs) to the media flows of the current session. After the remote IP and UDP are learned, the media gateway reconfigures its firewall filtering function to check both the dynamically learned remote IP and UDP and the locally assigned IP and UDP of the current session. The per-session NAT learning function removes reachability issues in VoIP deployment, and the per-session firewall filtering function enhances security protection in VoIP deployment.

Method and system for providing secure media gateways to support interdomain traversal

An approach provides interdomain traversal to support packetized voice transmissions. A signaling message is received for establishing a voice call from a first endpoint associated with a first domain to a second endpoint associated with a second domain. The first endpoint queries a STUN (Simple Traversal of UDP (User Datagram Protocol)) server to determine information relating to a firewall and network address translator that the first endpoint is behind, and to log into a TURN (Traversal Using Relay NAT (Network Address Translation)) server configured to establish a media path between the first endpoint and the second endpoint. A first proxy server serving the first endpoint communicates with an ENUM (Electronic Number) server to convert a directory number corresponding to the second endpoint to a network address. The first proxy server communicates with a second proxy server serving the second endpoint to establish the voice call. The STUN server, the TURN server and the ENUM server are maintained by service provider. The first endpoint is authenticated to permit exchange of a media stream over the media path. The media stream is relayed, if the first endpoint is successfully authenticated.
