Transdermal drug delivery compositions and topical compositions for application on the skin

Transdermal delivery compositions and topical compositions for application to the skin are provided. The transdermal delivery composition includes at least two penetrants working synergistically but by disparate biochemical pathways. In one embodiment, the transdermal delivery system includes benzyl alcohol and lecithin organogel. The transdermal delivery compositions are used in a variety of topical compositions as a means of transdermally delivering and topically administering different drugs and agents, including compositions promoting collagen biosynthesis, retinoids and skin lighteners, chemical denervation agents such as BOTOX®, anti-fungal agents, anesthetics and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). In addition, these topical compositions may be used in combination with non-ablative treatment modalities, such as microdermabrasion, laser-based skin remodeling and radio-frequency-based skin remodeling.

Method and apparatus for the treatment of benign pigmented lesions

Disclosed is an apparatus and method which employs an energy source, one or more switches, electronic control circuitry, and a surface that can be placed in contact with a region of a person's skin containing a benign pigmented lesion. Within the apparatus, electrical current is passed through a heating element that is thermally coupled to the surface so that this surface is heated rapidly and then is subsequently cooled rapidly. By judicious choice of the rate of heating, maximum temperatures achieved, and rate of cooling, thermal injury to the skin can be confined primarily to the epidermal region of the skin in contact with the surface.

Use of optical skin measurements to determine cosmetic skin properties

The present invention relates to the use of optical skin measurements to determine skin properties such as surface topography, hydration, elasticity, pigmentation intensity or uniformity, dermal thickness, dermal perfusion, presence or concentration or composition of oil on or near the surface, and apparent age of the skin. An apparatus according to the present invention can comprise a skin positioning system for positioning the skin relative to other parts of the apparatus. An illumination system, adapted to produce illumination radiation, can mount with the skin positioning system such that illumination radiation impinges on a first portion of the skin at a first determined angle thereto. A detection system can mount with the skin positioning system such that radiation from a second portion of the skin at a second determined angle therefrom impinges on the detector. An analysis system can receive information from the detection system, and determine one or more skin properties from the detected radiation and the illumination radiation.

A device and a method for thermal treatments of target material with various thermal interactions are disclosed. A device for treating hair on the skin comprises a treatment head coupled to a housing; a hair remover for removing the hair from a target area of the skin; a light source for transmitting a predetermined amount of energy to the skin. A device and method for treatment of tissue. The device comprises of an energy source for treatment of surface and subsurface tissue, And of a mechanical source of energy for mechanically deforming the treated tissue. Both the Mechanical Energy (ME) and the Treatment Energy (TE) may be either continuously operating (CO) or modulated in time and space.

Device for dermabrasion

Skin dermabrasion device by gently contacting the skin with an abrasive, comprising a handleable housing (10) and driving means for the abrasive. This device is intended in particular for cosmetic treatments of the epidermis called microepidermabrasion. The device comprises a curved abrasive surface (30) held by a support (32) mounted in or on the housing (10, 18) for an oscillatory motion allowing the oscillation of the curved abrasive surface (30) about its axis. A support surface (40) surrounds the abrasive surface (30) on at least two opposing sides leaving a gap to allow the oscillating motion. The device is arranged in such a way as to allow, by the application of the support surface (44) against the skin (50) and around the region of the skin to be treated, the gentle contact of this region of skin with the oscillating abrasive surface. Thus a microabrasion of the epidermis through the oscillation of the curved abrasive surface (30) lightly applied against the skin is achieved, thanks to the support surface (40) that prevents any injury or penetration beyond the epidermis.

Compositions and Kits for Hair and Skin

Compositions, kits, and methods for repairing bonds, for example, disulfide bonds, in hair or on the skin are disclosed. The compositions provide improved conditioning benefit for dry hair or moisturize the skin. The compositions also provide a long lasting moisturized feel and smooth feel to the skin or hair, without feeling greasy. The compositions contain one or more compounds that covalently crosslink at least two thiol groups in the hair or on the skin. Use of the crosslinking compositions prevents reversion of the repaired bonds to their reduced (thiol) state, for at least one week, one month, six months, or one year, after a single application of the composition. Improved methods of styling hair, for example permanent hair waving, hair curling, and hair straightening are also provided.

Instruments and techniques for controlled removal of epidermal layers

An instrument and technique for the removal of epidermal layers in a controlled manner utilizing a hand-held instrument with a working end that (i) a vacuum aspiration system, (ii) a source for delivery of a sterile fluids or pharmacological agents to the skin; and (iii) a skin interface surface in the working end that has specially shape structure for abrading surface layers of the patient's epidermis as the working end is moved over the patient's skin while at the same time causing rapid penetration of the fluids into the skin for therapeutic purposes. Movement of the working end across the skin causes abrasion of the surface layers in a path over the patient's skin. The method of the invention may be used in a periodic treatment for the removal of superficial skin layers that enhances the synthesis of dermal collagen aggregates by inducing the body's natural wound healing response. The method of the invention creates more normal dermal architectures in skin with limited depths of skin removal by the series of superficial treatments that may be comparable to the extent of neocollagenesis caused by a deep skin removal treatment (e.g., CO2 laser skin removal).

Formulations containing astragalus extracts and uses thereof

InactiveUS20070122501A1High rate of cell divisionIncrease telomerase activityBiocideAnimal repellantsDrugReplicative capacity
Formulations containing plant extracts, in particular Astragalus extracts, and their use in inducing telomerase activity in cells, are described. Such compositions include pharmaceutical, including topical, and nutraceutical formulations. The methods and compositions are useful for treating diseases subject to treatment by an increase in telomerase activity in selected cells, such as, for example, HIV infection, various degenerative diseases, and acute or chronic skin ailments. They are also useful for enhancing replicative capacity of cells in culture, as in ex vivo cell therapy and proliferation of stem cells. Also described are cosmetic formulations of such extracts for conditioning the skin.
