Sound tube tuned multi-driver earpiece

A method of optimizing the audio performance of an earpiece and the resultant device are provided. The disclosed earpiece combines at least two drivers within a single earpiece. If a pair of drivers is used, each driver has a discrete sound delivery tube. If more than two drivers are used, preferably the outputs from the two lower frequency drivers are merged into a single sound delivery tube while the output from the third driver is maintained in a separate, discrete sound tube. To compensate for the inherent phase shift of the earpiece the lengths of the sound delivery tubes, and thus driver offset, are regulated. Further audio performance optimization can be achieved through an iterative process of measuring the performance of the earpiece and making further, minor adjustments to the sound delivery tube lengths. The sound delivery tubes can include transition regions. The earpiece is configured to use removable / replaceable eartips. Acoustic filters can be interposed between one or both driver outputs and the earpiece output.

An apparatus and method of detecting COPD and in particular, emphysema utilizes a change in acoustic transmission characteristics of a lung due to e.g. the appearance of fenestrae (perforations) in the alveoli of the lung. The use of acoustic signals may provide good sensitivity to the existence of alveolar fenestrae, even for microscopic emphysema, and the appearance and increase in fenestrae may be determined by monitoring acoustic transmission characteristics such as, for example, an increase in acoustic signal velocity and velocity dispersion, and / or a change in attenuation. A transmitter may be located in e.g. the supra-clavicular space and receivers may be mounted on the chest. Measurements may be correlated between pairs of receivers to determine acoustic transmission profiles.

Thermal pulsed ultrasonic flow sensor

In thermal pulse flow measurements a relatively small bolus of flowing fluid is heated or cooled and the time required for the bolus to move downstream a known distance is measured. In many fluids, changing the temperature changes the acoustic transmission properties of the bolus from those of the rest of the fluid, so the bolus can be detected when it intersects an acoustic beam. The use of an acoustic beam or beams, which are usually defined between acoustic transmitting receiving transducers, typically provides a high frequency carrier which is modulated by the change in acoustic properties of the bolus when it passes between the two transducers. When compared to conventional thermal measurements, this acoustic approach provides faster response times and can thus be used for measuring higher flow rates.

Drill string incorporating an acoustic telemetry system employing one or more low frequency acoustic attenuators and an associated method of transmitting data

A drill pipe forms an acoustic transmission channel for data to be transmitted from a downhole transceiver to a surface transceiver. By positioning a first low frequency acoustic attenuator between a drill bit and the downhole transceiver, acoustic noise generated by the drill bit is attenuated. Similarly, by positioning the surface transceiver between the top of the drill pipe and a second low frequency acoustic attenuator, acoustic noise generated by surface equipment is attenuated. In this manner, the first and second low frequency acoustic attenuators serve as terminators for the acoustic transmission channel. Finally, by combining a third low frequency acoustic attenuator positioned between first and second sections of the drill pipe with first and second acoustic transceivers acoustically isolated from one another by the third low frequency acoustic attenuator and non-acoustically coupled to one another for bi-directional exchanges of signals, an acoustic repeater is provided for the transmission channel.

Method and device for modelling room acoustic based on measured geometrical data

The invention provides a method for generating an output indicative of acoustical sound transmission in a room. By using e.g. a point cloud representation of an acoustic environment, it is possible to calculate its acoustics from the interior information obtained from the depth camera. This approach is suitable e.g. for run-time applications since it is not based on an audible excitation that can disturb running audio. Also, the point-cloud model can be updated in real time according to the scene changes detected by depth-camera. This allows efficient acoustical simulation of dynamic, interactive environments. Although only geometrical information of a room is provided, high amount of surface details leaves possibility for implementation of material recognition algorithms that involve semantic mapping. This can provide information of reflective properties of surfaces or objects at a point level. Also, a high amount of details allows a good approximation of complex geometries, e.g. porous materials, and rough surfaces, thus a more natural simulation of wave phenomena like diffraction and scattering is possible.
