Highly efficient series string LED driver with individual LED control

A current source generates, with high efficiency, a current that is substantially constant over a wide range of output voltages. This current is injected into the first end of a series-connected string (hereinafter referred to as string) of LEDs, with the second end of the string connected through a resistor to ground. The voltage developed across this resistor, which is a measure of current flow in the series string, is fed back to the current source, wherein feedback maintains nearly constant current output over a wide range of output voltages. A switch, such as a field effect transistor (FET) is placed in parallel with each LED in the string. A level shift gate driver couples a pulse width modulated control signal to the gate of each FET. When the FET across a particular LED is on, substantially all the current flows through the FET rather than the LED, and little or no light is emitted. Because the one resistance of the FET is very low, the power dissipated in the FET (current squared times resistance) is also very low. With the FET turned on, the forward voltage drop of the LED it is controlling drops to near zero, since little current is flowing through the LED. However, because the current source is designed to provide constant current over a wide range of output voltages, the current flow through the other LEDs in the series string changes little. When the FET is turned off, substantially all of the current flows through the associated LED, turning it on. By modulating the duty cycle of each FET, the brightness of each associated LED may be varied smoothly over its full range.

Toroidal continuously variable transmission control apparatus

In a toroidal continuously variable transmission (TCVT) control apparatus with a variator unit and a ratio control hydraulic system, an electronic TCVT control unit electronically feedback-controls a transmission ratio based on a deviation from a desired transmission ratio, and generates a normal-period command signal to be input to a step motor for compensating for the deviation. The control unit determines whether the deviation can be compensated for by electronically feedback-controlling the transmission ratio based on the deviation and generates an abnormal-period command signal to be input to the step motor to realize a step-motor displacement capable of shifting or diverging the transmission ratio to a speed-reduction side, while keeping a trunnion out of contact with a stopper in the direction of the trunnion axis, when the deviation cannot be compensated for by electronically feedback-controlling the transmission ratio based on the deviation.

Display device and liquid crystal display panel

A display device is provided that comprises a liquid crystal display panel for displaying an image by spatial light modulation, and circuitry for switching liquid crystal in the panel between having a first configuration in a first mode to cause an image displayed using the panel to be discernible from a wide range of viewing angles, and having a second configuration in a second mode to cause an image displayed using the panel to be discernible substantially only from within a narrow range of viewing angles. Several types of display panel to achieve such in-panel switching between public and private viewing modes are disclosed.

Method and apparatus for improving the comfort of CPAP

A low-cost CPAP apparatus in which, upon detection of the transition from inhalation to exhalation, the blower motor is de-energized to allow it to freewheel. When the pressure in the patient mask (or whatever interface is utilized) reaches a minimum pressure level during exhalation, the motor is re-energized and its speed is controlled so to maintain the pressure at a level suitable for exhalation. Upon detection of the transition from exhalation to inhalation, the motor speed is increased to provide higher pressures in the patient mask suitable for inhalation.

Uplink (UL) power control apparatus and method in broadband wireless communication system

An uplink (UL) power control apparatus and method in a broadband wireless communication system are provided. The Mobile Station (MS) includes a power controller for calculating a power compensation value using a last transmit power in a previous closed loop power control when a power control mode is changed to an open loop power control, and determining a transmit power according to the open loop power control using the power compensation value; and a transmitter for adjusting and transmitting the transmit power of a UL signal under control of the power controller.

Interactive region-based linear 3D face models

An improved modeling system and associated techniques are described herein. In various embodiments, a modeling system generates a spatially local PCA model where the parts are connected with continuity constraints (e.g., soft constraints) in the boundaries. Experimental results on 3D face modeling show that the spatially local PCA model generalizes better than a holistic model. Moreover, the modeling system smoothly varies local control points for face posing in animation.
