Methods and apparatus for fairly scheduling queued packets using a ram-based search engine

InactiveUS6389031B1Minimizes burstinessMinimize indexData switching by path configurationProcessor registerHierarchical search
A hierarchical searching technique is used to find the first memory location of a calendar queue with a validity bit of "1" (that is, the lowest time stamp). The bit string at any level l (l<> 0) can be stored in a RAM of size glMl-1. The string at the highest level in the hierarchy (l=0) can be stored in an M0 bit register. The number of address bits need to address any bit at a level l may be expressed as:Equation (11) illustrates a method of the present invention for addressing in a hierarchical search. That is, m0 most significant bits of the time stamp address should be used at level 0. Then, at level l, the complete address used at upper level (l-1) will be used to locate the proper gl bit word in its glMl-1 memory. Another log2gl bits following the previous ml-1 bits is extracted from the time stamp address and used to locate the proper bit in the gl bit word that has just been identified. In this way, the search time depends on the number L of levels. Thus, a scheduler based on the present invention can schedule large numbers of flows to be placed on a high speed data link (i.e., with a small time slot). A two (2) dimensional shaper uses a similar hierarchical searching and addressing technique. Finally, any overflow of binary encoded time stamp and system potential values is tracked so that time stamp aging does not cause problems.

Transdermal delivery of systemically active central nervous system drugs

The invention relates to a transdermal or transmucosal non-occlusive, semi-solid pharmaceutical formulation that includes at least one systemically active agent that acts on the Central Nervous System (CNS) of a mammal; and a permeation enhancing solvent system present in an amount sufficient to solubilize the at least one active ingredient. The permeation enhancing solvent system includes a pharmaceutically acceptable monoalkyl ether of diethylene glycol; a pharmaceutically acceptable glycol; preferably also a fatty alcohol and or a fatty acid; and a mixture of a C2 to C4 alcohol and water so that the permeation enhancing solvent system (a) inhibits crystallization of the at least one active ingredient on a skin or mucosal surface of a mammal, (b) reduces or prevents transfer of the formulation to clothing or to another being, (c) modulates biodistribution of the at least one active agent within different layers of skin, (d) facilitates absorption of the at least one active agent by a skin or a mucosal surface of a mammal, or (e) provides a combination of one or more of (a) through (d).

Downhole shock absorber for torsional and axial loads

A shock-absorber subassembly for a subsurface drilling assembly is disclosed. The shock-absorber subassembly comprises a mandrel, a body assembly, and at least one torsional spring assembly. The mandrel has a bore extending therethrough and has one end connectable to a portion of the subsurface drilling assembly. The body assembly has a bore extending therethrough and one end connectable to another portion of the subsurface drilling assembly. The body assembly is coupled to the mandrel to establish fluid communication between the bore of the mandrel and the bore of the body assembly and to permit planar rotational movement of the mandrel relative to the body assembly. The at least one torsional spring assembly engages the mandrel and the body assembly to absorb torsional shocks and vibrations between the mandrel and the body assembly and to limit the degree of planar rotation between the mandrel and the body assembly. In a second embodiment, the body assembly is coupled to the mandrel to permit axial movement as well as planar rotational movement. In this second embodiment, the shock-absorber subassembly further comprises at least one axial spring assembly engaging the mandrel and the body assembly to absorb axial shocks and vibrations between the mandrel and the body assembly.

Liquid cooled thermosiphon with flexible coolant tubes

A fluid heat exchanger assembly cools an electronic device with a cooling fluid supplied from a heat extractor (R, F) to a plurality of tubes extending between header tanks in an upper portion of a housing. A refrigerant is disposed in the lower portion of the housing for liquid-to-vapor transformation. The tubes are radially flexible to vary the volume of the tubes for modulating the flow of coolant liquid through the tubes in response to heat transferred by an electronic device to the lower portion of the housing.
