A system is disclosed that extracts bodily fluid to a reaction chamber for monitoring a substance or property of the patient fluid. In one embodiment, a pump is used to advance the sample of bodily fluid through a filter to produce a filtrate. Another pump advances filtrate into the reaction chamber, while another pump advances reactant into the reaction chamber. A sensor in communication with the reaction chamber determines a concentration of nitric oxide or one of its metabolic products. Methods are also disclosed.

Use of redundant routes to increase the yield and reliability of a VLSI layout

Disclosed is a method and system for inserting redundant paths into an integrated circuit. Particularly, the invention provides a method for identifying a single via in a first path connecting two elements, determining if an alternate route is available for connecting the two elements (other than a redundant via), and for inserting a second path into the available alternate route. The combination of the first and second paths provides greater redundancy than inserting a redundant via alone. More importantly, such redundant paths provide for redundancy when congestion prevents a redundant via from being inserted adjacent to the single via. An embodiment of the method further comprises removing the single via and any redundant wire segments, if all of the additional vias used to form the second path can be made redundant.

Scaling VLANs in a data network

A technique for scaling virtual local area networks (VLANs) in a manner that allows existing standards to be used to process VLAN traffic and provide loop-free topologies for the VLANs. A data network is divided into customer, domain and core networks. VLANs are apportioned between the core network and domain networks such that VLANs apportioned to the core networks are global to both the core and domain networks and VLANs apportioned to the domain networks are local to each domain. Packets transported in the domain network contain domain VLAN (DVLAN) tags which are conventional VIDs that identify VLANs used to transport the packets in the domain network. Packets transported in the core network contain transport VLAN (TVLAN) tags which are conventional VIDs that identify VLANs used to transport the packets in the core network. In addition, packets transported in the core network contain pseudo-LAN (P-LAN) tags that are used in combination with TVLAN tags to identify DVLAN tags associated with the packet.

Multi-channel network monitoring apparatus, signal replicating device, and systems including such apparatus and devices, and enclosure for multi-processor equipment

A multi-channel network monitoring apparatus has input connectors for network signals to be monitored and four channel processors in a rack-mountable chassis / enclosure for receiving and processing a respective pair of incoming signals to produce monitoring results. Each processor operates independently of the others and is replaceable without interrupting their operation. LAN connectors enable onward communication of the monitoring results. A cross-point switch routes each incoming signal to a selected processor and can re-route a channel to another processor in the event of processor outage. Each processor has a self-contained sub-system of processing modules interconnected via a CPU-peripheral interface in a backplane, which provides a separate peripheral interface for each processor. The backplane provides locations for processors to lie horizontally across a major portion of the backplane area facing the front of the enclosure, and a location for an interface module over a minor portion of that area facing the rear, so as to provide external connectors at the rear of the enclosure. A power supply module is positioned over another portion of the backplane area, on the same side as the interface module. The location of the power supply module behind the backplane saves height and / or width in the rack.

Winch assembly for use with synthetic ropes

A winch assembly is disclosed that eliminates rope crushing, even when synthetic ropes are used. Tension is applied to the rope by at least one traction sheave so that the tension at the drum is reduced. By using multiple sheaves with large wrap angles traction can be applied to the rope over a much larger area, reducing shear stress and minimizing internal wear due to relative motion of rope components. The winch drum and at least one traction sheave are driven independently, preferably by AC induction motors using frequency control. The winch assembly may operate in conjunction with a hydraulic tensioner so that lower horsepower motors can be used to maintain constant tension in moving systems.

Nucleic acid sequence detection using multiplexed oligonucleotide PCR

Methods for rapidly detecting single or multiple sequence alleles in a sample nucleic acid are described. Provided are all of the oligonucleotide pairs capable of annealing specifically to a target allele and discriminating among possible sequences thereof, and ligating to each other to form an oligonucleotide complex when a particular sequence feature is present (or, alternatively, absent) in the sample nucleic acid. The design of each oligonucleotide pair permits the subsequent high-level PCR amplification of a specific amplicon when the oligonucleotide complex is formed, but not when the oligonucleotide complex is not formed. The presence or absence of the specific amplicon is used to detect the allele. Detection of the specific amplicon may be achieved using a variety of methods well known in the art, including without limitation, oligonucleotide capture onto DNA chips or microarrays, oligonucleotide capture onto beads or microspheres, electrophoresis, and mass spectrometry. Various labels and address-capture tags may be employed in the amplicon detection step of multiplexed assays, as further described herein.

High-speed differential signal connector with interstitial ground aspect

A connector assembly for connecting to differential signal circuits on at least one circuit board may be of the docking type or the interposer type. A housing of the connector has transversely and longitudinally extending walls that define a plurality of cavities that extend completely through the housing. Terminal assemblies with at least one differential signal pair are received in the cavities with tail portions on at least one end of the differential pairs to connect to a circuit board. The connector housing has conductive surfaces and a plurality of ground terminal members are disposed along the transverse walls or the longitudinal walls, or both, for connecting to ground circuits in the circuit board. The ground terminal members each have a plurality of ground terminals, which are disposed along the walls at intermediate or diagonal positions relative to the differential signal pairs, such as adjacent to four differential signal pairs. Such placement of the ground terminal members also subdivides the differential signal pairs into groups or sets. This interstitial ground terminal arrangement also serves to keep the impedance at the connector-circuit board interface relatively uniform for high speed signals in the differential pairs.

Lamp driver system with improved redundancy

A lamp driver system that facilitates improved reliability and performance for a display system is provided. The lamp driver system includes a fault detector and an output steering device. The fault detector determines when a failure occurs in a lamp illuminating the display system. The output steering device selectively drives the lamps to illuminate the display system. Specifically, when a failure in a first lamp is detected by the fault detector, the output steering device is used to selectively drive a second lamp to provide the needed illumination to the display system. The lamp driver system thus can provide redundancy in the display system by automatically switching to a backup lamp when a failure in the first lamp is detected. This redundancy can improve the reliability and performance of the display system.
