Method and apparatus for acoustically driven media filtration

A method and apparatus for acoustically enhanced particle separation uses a chamber through which flows a fluid containing particles to be separated. A porous medium is disposed within the chamber. A transducer mounted on one wall of the chamber is powered to impose on the porous medium an acoustic field that is resonant to the chamber when filled with the fluid. Under the influence of the resonant acoustic field, the porous medium is able to trap particles substantially smaller than the average pore size of the medium. When the acoustic field is deactivated, the flowing fluid flushes the trapped particles from the porous medium and regenerates the medium. A collection circuit for harvesting the particles flushed from the porous medium is disclosed. Aluminum mesh, polyester foam, and unconsolidated glass beads are disclosed as porous media.

Methods for monitoring hydrate inhibition including an early warning system for hydrate formation

A method for determining the presence of a hydrate history in a fluid involves obtaining a sample of the fluid. The sample is then cooled to determine the amount of cooling required in order to induce hydrate formation. The result is then compared to the amount of cooling required to induce hydrate formation in a sample, which has been heat treated to remove any hydrate history present, before cooling. Also provided are methods for prevention or control of hydrate formation of a fluid in a system. The degree of inhibition of hydrate formation in the fluid is monitored and then the system conditions or fluid composition are adjusted as required. Methods for carrying out monitoring of a fluid liable to form hydrates are also described.

Noninvasive method and apparatus to measure central blood pressure using extrinsic perturbation

Method to obtain continuous recording of the central arterial blood pressure waveform noninvasively utilizes dual (distal occlusion and proximal) brachial artery occlusion cuffs and dual external osculation. The distal arterial occlusion cuff eliminates venous stasis artifact and flow related gradient from aorta to the brachial artery. The proximal cuff measures, and delivers, dual external oscillation. The dual external oscillation allows measurement of the arterial compliance at a multitude of transmural pressure values during each cardiac cycle. Transmural pressure / arterial compliance and arterial pressure curves are subsequently reconstructed using dual external oscillation. The curves consist of two parts, rapid and slow parts, both at the frequency higher than the arterial pulse.
