Systems and Methods for Providing Access to Various Files Across a Network

Systems and methods for providing access to an information stream in a format customized for a receiving device involve a network-based information storage and distribution system for receiving, storing, and distributing an information stream to a user of the information stream over a network. The system receives media files and converts the media files into multiple formats. When a user attempts to access the media files, such as by browsing a site containing the media files or clicking on a link to the media files, a determination is made as to the type of device attempting to access the files. A database of devices and what file formats, resolutions, codecs, etc., they support is consulted to select a file format suitable for that device. Then, the selected media files are displayed or made available for download or transmission to the user's device in a format compatible with the particular device.

Discovering peer-to-peer content using metadata streams

Discovering peer-to-peer content using metadata streams involves capturing, for each of a plurality of devices, a content and metadata stream that describes a context of the content. The metadata streams are sent to a metadata repository contemporaneously with the capture of the content by the respective devices. Network queries of the streaming metadata are enable via the metadata repository, and, in response to the network queries, peer-to-peer access of the content is facilitated from one or more of the devices.

Storage area network methods and apparatus with virtual SAN recognition

A storage area network (SAN) has one or more host digital data processors are coupled to one or more storage devices (e.g., LUNs) by an interconnect, e.g., a fiber channel-based fabric. Switches or switch-like interfaces on the interconnect fabric define zones or regions in which certain hosts can access certain storage devices, but not other storage devices. Scanners, e.g., operating within agents associated with the hosts, collect information regarding the regions and, more particularly, the hosts, storage devices and interconnect elements that make them up. A manager operating, for example, on a further digital data processor disambiguates information from the regions and discerns the topology of the portion of the SAN spanned by the regions. Thus, it identifies as a virtual SAN elements from regions that have at least one common storage device with at least one other region.

System and method for utilizing compression in database caches to facilitate access to database information

A system and method are disclosed for utilizing compression in database caches to facilitate access to database information. In contrast with applying compression to the database that is stored on disk, the present invention achieves performance advantages by using compression within the main memory database cache used by a database management system to manage data transfers to and from a physical database file stored on a storage system or stored on a networked attached device or node. The disclosed system and method thereby provide a significant technical advantage by increasing the effective database cache size. And this effective increase in database cache size can greatly enhance the operations-per-second capability of a database management system by reducing unnecessary disk or network accesses thereby reducing data access times.

Fuzzy autosuggestion for query processing services

Systems and methods of generating geo-aware fuzzy autosuggestions for a search engine are disclosed. Transmissions received by a server system may be processed, the transmissions indicating characters received via a user interface as user input for a search query to a searching service. Information about a geographical location received by the server system may be processed, and a geographical area may be identified. A data store may be searched with an exact matching method to identify exact matches of the first set of characters with candidate data from the data store for geo-specific suggestions. Fuzzy searching operations may be performed based on the geographical area and the first set of characters. Geo-specific suggestions may be selected based on the fuzzy searching operations and may be transmitted to the end-user device to cause indication as a user-selectable option via the user interface to complete the search query.

Utility-based archiving

A system and associated methodology is provided that is adapted to infer what to do with an item, and more particularly whether to archive and / or keep active an item in a more active, easy-to-access store based upon a cost-benefit analysis. The cost-benefit analysis determines the overhead associated with keeping the item active (e.g., not archiving it) versus the gains in connection with having quick and easy access to the item. The cost of maintaining an item in an active state is measured in terms of the size of the item which, in turn, affects the amount of space needed to store it. The benefit of keeping the item active is measured in terms of a probabilistic determination describing how a user will access the item in the future, which is a reflection of the utility of the item in an accessible state. The invention leverages notions of temporal sensitivity of the likelihood that an item will be needed in the future such that determined values and inferences can be dynamically updated over time. Items having a small probability of being accessed again after an initial review are categorized as one-shot items.

System and method for broadcasting web pages and other information

A system and method for interactive broadcast of Internet web pages, or the like, on dedicated downstream channels in a cable television system or the like facilitates hyperlinking by a user from a broadcast television program to a web page, or between web pages, for example. In one embodiment, each user's set top is programmed with channel mapping information that maps each hyperlink request to a particular channel and time where the requested information is being broadcast in a multiplexed information stream. In response to receipt of a hyperlink request from a user actuating a remote control button, mouse or keyboard, the set top tunes to the appropriate one of the downstream channels, and downloads the web page or other information. In one embodiment to facilitate picture-in-picture capability using a single tuner, the tuner in the set top briefly tunes away from the video program to the appropriate data channel for receiving the hyperlink information. After the information associated with the hyperlink is downloaded and stored in the set top, the tuner automatically tunes back to the video program. The user can then interact with the hyperlink content and continue watching TV simultaneously. Alternatively, a scaler application is provided in the headend that reduces the size of the video program or a content related web page, for example, so that they can then be combined at the headend in a picture-in-picture format.
