Accurate signal detection in a wireless environment

A method for accurate signal detection begins by receiving a radio frequency signal, which is then converted into baseband signals. The processing then continues by performing a normalized auto correlation on the down-converted baseband signal to produce a normalized auto correlation signal. The process continues by performing a periodic pattern detection on the down-converted baseband signal to produce a normalized detected periodic signal. The process then continues by comparing the normalized auto correlation value with an auto correlation threshold and by comparing the normalized detected periodic signal with a set of thresholds. When the normalized auto correlation value compares favorably with the auto correlation threshold and when the normalized detected periodic signal compares favorably with the set of thresholds, the down-converted baseband signal is indicated to be a valid signal.

Signal detection circuitry for a serial interface oversamples the input—i.e., samples the input multiple times per clock cycle—so that the likelihood of missing a signal is reduced. Sampling may be done with a regenerative latch which has a large bandwidth and can latch a signal at high speed. The amplitude threshold for detection may be programmable, particularly in a programmable device. Thus, between the use of a regenerative latch which is likely to catch any signal that might be present, and the use of oversampling to avoid the problem of sampling at the wrong time, the likelihood of failing to detect a signal is greatly diminished. Logic, such as a state machine, may be used to determine whether the samples captured s do or do not represent a signal. That logic may be programmable, allowing a user to set various parameters for signal detection.

High-speed signal detect for serial interface

More accurate signal detection circuitry in serial interfaces, particularly on a programmable integrated circuit device, such as a PLD, includes a high-speed, high-resolution, high-bandwidth comparator, along with digital filtering, to reduce the effect of process, temperature or supply variations. The comparator is used to compare a direct input signal with a programmable reference voltage, and, in a preferred embodiment, can detect the signal level within 8 mV accuracy. The output of the comparator may then be digitally filtered. Preferably, both a high-pass digital filter and a low-pass analog filter may be used to eliminate glitches and low-frequency noise. Preferably, the digital filters are programmable to adjust the sensitivity to noise. The filtered output is then latched and output to indicate receipt or loss of signal. This signal detect circuitry can operate reliably at data rates as high as 7 Gbps.

System and method for detecting pulses in received signal in streaming manner

The disclosure relates to a system and a method for detecting pulses in received signals in a streaming manner. A threshold detection method is fused with a double-difference phase modulation detection method to provide a higher-performance method of pulse detection for any digital receiver. The first pulse detection technique uses a signal power threshold. When the square of the magnitude of a pulse crosses the signal power threshold, the beginning of a pulse is declared and pulse processing starts. The second pulse detection technique is model based and uses a windowed detector that crossesa phase difference threshold when the pulse has consistent second-order (in general d-th order) difference phase values within the window. The first technique has low latency and is independent of pulse width, but only operates well at SNR values greater than 15 dB. The second technique has higher latency and requires a minimum pulse width, but operates at lower (approximately 0 dB) SNR values.
