The devices may be designed to efficiently operate at a plurality of operating conditions, such as operating conditions that produce an acoustic signal above or below the human hearing range. The damping members (16) act to translate torque between the input and output members and to dampen torsional forces generated between the prime mover and the transmission. A bypass clutch (40) acts to translate torque directly between the input and output members thereby providing a path for partial torque translation that bypasses the damping elements at low rotational speeds of the input and output members. In addition, the torsional damper (10) includes a clutch release mechanism (42) that is responsive to centrifugal forces acting on the torsional damper to disengage the bypass clutch (40) to reduce the torque translated directly between the input and output members at high rotational speeds.

The pulley side may include balancing bores for receiving balancing material to balance the finished assembly. An angular interference fit between the flywheel and motor shaft may also assist in balancing the finished assembly. A ventilation fan system may also be connected to the shaft at an end opposite the flywheel.

The pulley (22) includes an inner clutch surface (26) and the clutch element includes a plurality of coils in frictional engagement with the inner clutch surface and an end coupled to the spring shell for expanding the coils against the inner clutch surface upon rotation of the spring shell with the drive hub to selectively transfer torque between the drive hub (40) and the pulley (22).
