In music, unison is two or more musical parts sounding the same pitch or at an octave interval, usually at the same time. Rhythmic patterns which are homorhythmic are also called unison.

Apparatus and method for generating a magnetic field

A system whereby a magnetic tip attached to a surgical tool is detected, displayed and influenced positionally so as to allow diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to be performed rapidly, accurately, simply, and intuitively is described. The tools that can be so equipped include catheters, guidewires, and secondary tools such as lasers and balloons, in addition biopsy needles, endoscopy probes, and similar devices. The magnetic tip allows the position and orientation of the tip to be determined without the use of x-rays by analyzing a magnetic field. The magnetic tip further allows the tool tip to be pulled, pushed, turned, and forcefully held in the desired position by applying an appropriate magnetic field external to the patient's body. A Virtual Tip serves as an operator control. Movement of the operator control produces corresponding movement of the magnetic tip inside the patient's body. Additionally, the control provides tactile feedback to the operator's hand in the appropriate axis or axes if the magnetic tip encounters an obstacle. The output of the control combined with the magnetic tip position and orientation feedback allows a servo system to control the external magnetic field by pulse width modulating the positioning electromagnet. Data concerning the dynamic position of a moving body part such as a beating heart offsets the servo systems response in such a way that the magnetic tip, and hence the secondary tool is caused to move in unison with the moving body part. The tip position and orientation information and the dynamic body part position information are also utilized to provide a display that allows three dimensional viewing of the magnetic tip position and orientation relative to the body part.

Apparatus and method for synchronizing presentation from bit streams based on their content

Content of multiple digital bit streams with essentially the same renderable content, and situated at mutually remote locations, are played back in unison. First, time is synchronized among the processors that participate in a synchronized viewing session by playing back respective streams. Second, the playbacks are content-wise aligned, by rewinding or fast forwarding, to effect overall a precisely synchronized presentation. The content-wise alignment is achieved by means of a status message between processors that contains information characteristic of the sender's bit stream. If any participant, performs a control function (e.g. rewind, fast forward, stop), all other participants follow synchronously. The processor that initiates the session is deemed the initiator, a role that is thereafter assumed by the participant that has last performed a control function. The initiator directs all participants, at session startup, upon execution of each control function, and periodically, to synchronize their playbacks to that of the initiator, whereby all playbacks are synchronized and maintain in synchronization.

Method and apparatus for ocean energy conversion, storage and transportation to shore-based distribution centers

A fleet of vessels attached together longitudinally (rows), and transversely (columns) and operating in unison convert wave energy to electrical energy which is stored in either a chemical or electrical form. The vessels when detached from the fleet provide transportation to coastal or by navigable waterway ports of call for distribution to market centers. Both wind wave and swell wave energy conversion is performed by use of the differential motion between the vessels. Means are provided for the energy conversion systems to adapt to changes in wave direction, wave length, amplitude, and phase. Such vessels are self powered for off shore or inland waterway navigation, either singularly or in multiples, with which to deliver energy to other sea going vessels or to land based ports of call. Two or more of such vessels are capable of using the energy of waves during the delivery process. The fleet can maintain a designated geographical location by dynamic positioning. Alternatively, the fleet may maintain its designated position by moorage of a designated centrally located vessel in the fleet to a permanent anchoring system when operating at appropriate depths.

Method and apparatus for acquiring high resolution spectral data or high definition images in inhomogeneous environments

A method and apparatus for treating a sample for acquiring high-definition magnetic resonance images (MRI images) or high resolution nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra even in the presence of magnetic field distortions within one or multiple scans. The spatial nature and temporal dependence of the field inhomogeneities are determined a priori using any of several literature procedures. A static or oscillating magnetic field gradient is applied on the sample so as to endow spins at different positions within the sample with different resonance frequencies. A phase- and amplitude-modulated radiofrequency (RF) pulse is applied in unison with the magnetic field gradient so as to endow spins at different positions within the sample with a homogeneous excitation / inversion profile. The nature of the spatially-selective RF irradiation is tailored in such a way that, when added on top of the effects of the inhomogeneities, the spins' evolution phases and their signal amplitudes at the time of the acquisition become independent of the inhomogeneities. The spin signals thus created are captured and decoded, so as to obtain the spins' response as if the inhomogeneity was not present. The collected data is processed to a suitable rearrangement and Fourier analysis procedure to retrieve a final undistorted image or spectrum. The magnetic field gradient can be oscillated to impose this kind of inhomogeneity corrections on multiple spatial dimensions sequentially, or simultaneously.

Reed's high-rise emergency rescue egress system

From ancient history until now, man has constructed high-rise buildings of various kinds. They include monuments, castles, churches, office buildings, hotels, hospitals and residences. No matter how sophisticated construction techniques and technology have become, there is no system to transport people and equipment to or from selected locations between the ground level and roof of a high-rise; quickly, economically, consistently and safely outside the structure. Reed's High-Rise Emergency Rescue Egress System is such a system. This system solves the myriad problems which have existed for centuries relating to a need for external, vertical high-rise emergency evacuation and does so with substantial cost-efficiencies. Reed's High-Rise Emergency Rescue Egress System is comprised of varied electronic and mechanical components operating in unison. The three major pieces to the high-rise system are; a vehicle, a gondola and a roof-mount cantilever: The vehicle is a self-powered ground vehicle containing a gondola, stabilizing steel cables, drums, television screens, video cameras, communications, and remote control equipment. Once linked to a cantilever it provides power for lifting the gondola, equipment and personnel to monitor all activities below, beside or above the fire area. The self-powered cantilever is, remotely or manually, positioned on the roof of a high-rise building to a desired area of operation. The cantilever extends its connection arm over the edge of a high-rise building and lower cables to the ground rescue vehicle to make necessary connections with the gondola for traveling up and down the walls of a high-rise building. The cantilever roof-mount system is portable and contains steel cables, electric / hydraulic wenches, radio receivers, transmitters and video communication. The gondola, an enclosed cabin, is positioned on the rear, body portion, of the high-rise rescue vehicle. Once the gondola is linked to the vehicle and cantilever arm it becomes an exterior enclosed transporter in a matter of minutes. Reed's High-Rise Emergency Rescue Egress gondola will carry up to eight fully equipped firemen and can scale the wall of a burning building in minutes. The gondola carries firefighters and equipment below, beside or above the fire, while at the same time providing trapped building occupants a safe means of escape. A modified version of the gondola is used for high-rise building construction and maintenance.
